- WA040-005 House - 18th/19th century
Description
Situated on a plateau with sea-cliffs c. 300m to the S. Land at Ardeogenna was owned by James FitzGerald of Ardogenna in 1641, although he had leased it to Pierce Power in 1619 (Simington 1921, 59). In the early 18th century the land passed to the Coghlan family, one of whom, probbly Jeremiah, built the house in the late 18th century. By the 1870s it had passed to the McKenna family, and it was abandoned by 1920 (Fraher 1983). The house is a three-bay two storey Gothic mansion with circular corner towers of three stages. The house has plain rectangular windows, but the towers have pointed openings. A rectangular tower of five stages was added later. The house was connected by crenelated walls to a smiliarly decorated yard and outhouses to the E. (Bence-Jones 1978, 10) Bence-Jones, M. (1978) Burke’s guide to country houses, vol. 1, Ireland. - WA040-027 Promontory fort - coastal
Description
Identified from an aerial survey by Markus Casey, who described this possible monument as consisting of a rectangular S-facing headland, with a slight depression running across the neck and traces of a curving earthen bank or grassed-over stone wall enclosing the promontory and a large C-shaped area to the N. Two parallel banks run across the southerly point of the headland. The area is one of mixed quality pasture and scrub, with a strip of unimproved land along the coast. 75’ high cliffs surround this and nearby headlands. - WA040-028 Promontory fort - coastal
Description
Identified from an aerial survey by Markus Casey, who described this possible monument as a broad low-lying W-facing headland which shows evidence of a wide fosse curving around much of the broad neck of the headland. The level of the interior rises gently towards the E, suggesting a possible levelled bank. The entire interior has been planted with beat and is surrounded by steep 25’ high cliffs to sea rocks below. The area is one of flat fertile pasture and tillage.
