Description
Pre-development testing in 2003 revealed a circular deposit of charcoal and fragments of bone. When excavated the pre-cremated human remains were lying on the base of an upright ceramic vessel of probable Bronze age date (Diam. 0.3m , D 0.11m) (Wiggins, K.2006, 106). Description
This bowl shaped pit was excavated (Licence no. 03E0067) in advance of development. The single pit (0.96m diam.) had a maximum depth of 0.35m and contained a charcoal rich fill which produced a radiocarbon date range of 260-280 AD (Carroll et al. 2008, 21). It comprised twenty-three pits containing cremated bone and/or fragments of pottery vessels, eight substantially intact. Description
This pit was excavated (Licence no. 03E0067) in advance of development. Located to the northeast of the flat cemetery (DU005-131----) this pit (0.76m x 0.65m) contained a large quantity of decorated Neolithic pottery. Description
This burnt mound was excavated (Licence no. 03E0067) in advance of development. The burnt spread material (15.5m x 9.25m) was removed on to an irregular-shaped pit (1.2m x 0.8m) which was filled with wood rich material. Radiocarbon dating of the hazel and alder yielded a calibrated date range of 1260-900BC placing it in the late Bronze Age (Carroll et al. 2008, 33). Description
This area was excavated (Licence no. 03E0067) in advance of development. Located towards the south-W limit of a field that also contains a flat cemetery (DU005-131---) and cremations pits (DU005-135001-; DU005-135002-) this area encompassed seven burnt spreads, five pits, one curvilinear trench and a linear feature. Charcoal from a pit was radiocarbon dated yielding a date range of 1310-1040 BC placing at least some of the activity in the Late Bronze Age (Carroll et al. 2008, 33). Description
A ring ditch (12.4m diam.) was excavated (Licence no. 04E0741) in advance of development. Located just over 200m southwest of flat cemetery (DU005-131----), the ring ditch was characterised by the deposition of two concentrations of prehistoric pottery and cremated bone-a total of 697 sherds of pottery, equivalent to at least nineteen Late Bronze age vessels. A calibrated radiocarbon date of 1010-810 BC was recovered from a context that contained 141 pottery sherds, cremated bone and animal bone (Carroll et al. 2008, 72). Detached four-bay single-storey thatched house, c.1790, with projecting entrance porch. Single-bay single-storey extension to left, c.1900. Two-bay single-storey farm building, c.1800, to left.ROOF: Double pitched thatched roof with two brick chimney stacks; double pitched slate and tar roof to right bay and double pitched corrugated iron roof to left. WALLS: Nap rendered over rubble stone walls. OPENINGS: Square headed with nap rendered reveals and cills; timber sash and casement windows; timber panelled door, c.1980.
