- RO029-130 Ringfort - rath
Description
Marked as an almost complete circular field (diam. c. 50m) on the 1837 and 1915 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a level landscape at the W foot of Slieve Bawn. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 40m E-W; 38m N-S) defined by a slight scarp (H 0.4m). There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. Rath (RO029-129----) is c. 180m to the NE. Description
On a gentle S-facing slope of a broad low hill. Circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 46m E-W; 44m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 1.6-2.8m; int. H 0.15-0.6m; ext. H 0.75-1.1m) SW-N which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.85m) elsewhere, and by an overgrown rounded fosse (Wth of base 2.2-2.6m; D 0.3-0.65m) WNW-N-SE which has been re-cut as a drain SW-WNW and backfilled at N and E-SE.
