Description
Located at the crest of the SW-facing slope Corballis Hill. This is a depicted as a circular copse on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map where it is annotated as ‘Rathcoon’ in gothic lettering on both. This is a raised circular and grass-covered area (diam. 61m N-S) that slopes down to the S (H 3.4m). It is defined by scarps (at N: Wth 7m; H 3.5m; at S: Wth 1; H 1.2m) with slight traces of a bank at the top of the scarp NNW-NNE and E-SE. There is an external berm (Wth c. 7-10m) that morphs into a slight fosse (Wth of base 2.5m; ext. D 0.4m) at NNE. The most probable entrance is a gap (Wth of top 3.4m; Wth of base 1.7m) at S, and there are mature beech trees on the perimeter. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 10 July 2007 Revised: 24 March 2023
- ME018-028 Barrow - mound barrow
Description
Located at the crest of the SE-facing slope of a N-S ridge (L c. 300m). This is depicted as a small rectangular feature on the 1836 (dims c. 15m x c. 15m) and 1908 (dims c. 20m x c. 20m) editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a circular grass-covered mound (diam. 9.5m NE-SW; H 2.2 at NE to 2.8m at SW) with a stone revetment (H c. 1m) around its base that survives NW-NE but has probably collapsed elsewhere. The mound supports a single beech tree at the E edge. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 10 July 2007 Revision: 24 March 2023
- ME018-045 Field system
Description
Situated in a broad fold on a gentle SW-facing slope. An area of c. 2 ha (c. 5 acres) has the cropmarks of unmapped small rectangular fields (dims c. 25m x c. 25m to c. 70m x c. 25m) and some smaller plots defined by single drains. The features are only visible on Apple Maps, which utilises a survey conducted by Bluesky International during June 2018. The fields are aligned generally ENE-WSW and are overlain by the cropmarks of more regular ENE-WSW drains associated with the field system recorded on OS 6-inch maps. It was first recorded by Anthony Murphy. See the attached enhanced aerial view from Apple Maps Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 27 January 2020
