- MA071-001 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, located on a ridge at the break of slope on SW side, overlooking the Cloonlee River. There are extensive views over rolling pastureland. This rath is named ‘Lismore’ on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps. It is indicated on the 1838 edition as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) bordered at W by a road and at NW by a field boundary; by the time of the 1930 edition it is depicted as a D-shaped area, indicating that the E half of the rath has been removed in the intervening period. The remains consist of a slightly raised, roughly D-shaped area (33.5m NW-SE; 14m NE-SW) defined on curving side SE−N by a substantial scarp (ext. H 2m at S). At SSW-N the scarp has been incorporated into a field fence, outside which a farm track skirts the site. The straight side to NE is defined by scarp (H 0.80m) with a slight internal lip at its SE end suggesting it may have been incorporated into a field bank. The interior is level and grassy. There is a possible souterrain (MA071-001001-), evident as a linear surface depression (Wth 2-3.7m; D 0.6m), in the SW quadrant. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 24 June 2021
- MA071-001001 Souterrain
Description
In the SW quadrant of a rath (MA071-001----). A linear surface depression (Wth 2-3.7m; D 0.6m) extends for 9m from the rath scarp at SW through the interior to NE. At its SW end a stone slab projects horizontally from the external face of the rath scarp at a depth of c. 1m below the interior surface. These features may indicate a souterrain. - MA071-061 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, located on rise with extensive views over rolling grassland and expanse of wetland. Raised circular area (35.3m E−W; 37.7m N−S) defined by an earthen bank/scarp. The bank (Wth 4.8m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 2m at N) retains a low internal rim on the N arc and at SE, and has a broad external slump at NE−E; it is reduced to a scarp (H 1.2m at S, 2.2m at E) elsewhere. An earth and stone field fence (Wth 4.4m at W, 3.5m at S; int. H 1.4m at S, 1.5m at W; ext. H 0.7m at S, 1.6m at W) curves around the rath at S−NW. It has a broad internal slump at S-SW and has stone facing on its inner slope on the NW arc. This may be an original external bank which was modified and incorporated into the field fence. The intervening gap (Wth 4.4m at W, 3.5m at S) between it and the rath platform may preserve the outline of a fosse. There is a low slumped section (Wth 2.7m) in the scarp at SE, possibly the location of an original entrance. The interior has a slight slope down from centre to S−SE. Relict cultivation ridges, oriented E-W, are visible in the N half of the interior. Gorse and hawthorn bushes grow around the rath perimeter; the interior is grassy.
