- CL008-079 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a low hillock in rough pasture and rushes, overlooked by hillocks to the E and S but with wide views to the N. Partially indicated on the first edition (1842) of the OS 6-inch map; outlined on the subsequent OS 25-inch plan (1897) and hachured on the Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). An almost circular rath (diams. c. 21m N-S; c. 20m E-W) is defined ESE-WNW by a broad, low, round-topped bank (av. Wth 7m; H 1m). From WNW-E the rath is defined by a wide berm (Wth 5-8m), outside of which is a natural scarp. A stone wall (H 1m) is built immediately to the S of this berm, following its curvature and extending E and W from the rath. A gap (Wth 2.1m) at the E may be an original entrance but is in use as a pathway. The interior is slightly dished. A fulacht fia (CL008-134----) lies c. 98m to the WNW. - CL008-134 Fulacht fia
Description
In pasture and partly overlain by a modern NE-SW road. Identified in 1999 by Ken Hanley during monitoring of pipe works on the Lisdoonvarna Water Supply Scheme (Licence No. 99E0199). This fulacht fia (est. L 8.5m; Wth 8m; H 0.2-0.5m) is visible as a low kidney-shaped mound in the field to the N of the road. A limited portion (L 1-2m; Wth c. 0.5m) of the continuation of the mound to the S was exposed during monitoring and was excavated (Hanley 2000). It comprised a thin layer (T 0.02-0.1m) of dark, heat-shattered stones overlying natural subsoil, and covered by road bedding (T 0.4-0.5m) (ibid.). Reference Hanley, K. 2000 Lisdoonvarna water supply scheme. In I. Bennett (ed.), Excavations 1999: summary accounts of archaeological excavations in Ireland, 18, No. 58. Bray. Wordwell. - CL008-138 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
On a low rise in the NE corner of an undulating field in pasture immediately S of the road from Lisdoonvarna to Doolin with good views E-S-W. A possible ring-barrow with a central mound (Wth c. 5.5m) surrounded by a fosse (Wth c. 1.6m). An uneven low external bank (Wth c. 2.4m) is visible on a Google Earth image taken on 23 January 2010. A small area has been disturbed by animal poaching at SW. Portion of the rise may have continued into the adjacent field to the E and the N-S field boundary may slightly truncate the monument.
