Recorded monuments
- LI014-079007 Castle - unclassified
Description
Building annotated as 'Tower' on 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map may have been one of the four castles located in the medieval town of Caherconlish. Described in the Urban Survey of County Limerick (Bradley et. al. 1989, 89) as following; "There are records of four castles in the town (Westropp 1906-7, 94), traces of which survived apparently until the early 19th century but these have also vanished. These appear to have been fortified town houses of the type which still survives at Fethard, Co. Tipperary, and at Ardee and Carlingford, in Co. Louth. The site of one castle is marked on the O.S. map to the south-east of the churchyard but no remains survive there and another is marked on the O.S. map to the north of the village. Another castle may have been on the site of Caherconlish House to the south-west of the village (Lenihan 1866, 727). There are also references to a "college" (Lewis 1837, i, 239)." - LI014-111 Water mill - unclassified
Description
A medieval watermill standing on the W bank of the Groody River is depicted on the Down Survey map of Clanwilliam barony. The mill is shown standing on a bend of the river which is shown on the 1840 OS 6-inch map. This mill site was described by Lynch (1911-13, 27) as following; 'On the river Groody, near the hill, is the site of a mill, and a field near the site is called the mill field'. This watermill is depicted standing on the W bank of the Groody River to the SE of Knockatanacashlane Castle (LI014-039----) on the Down Survey map of Clanwilliam Barony (Hib. Reg.). The watermill is depicted as a rectangular-shaped single storey building with waterwheel on W gable on the Down Survey map of Caherconlish parish (NLI, MS 718). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Lord of Brittas was the owner of the lands of Knockatanacashlane on which there stood 'a Castle [LI014-039----] and a Mill in reparation' (Simington 1938, 64). According to Lynch (1911-13, 27) the townland of Knockatanacashlane depicted on the Down Survey map included a 'portion of the present village of Caherconlish, and the name means hill of the old castle, of which nothing is left save portions of the bawn walls and small towers'. Only one watermill is depicted in the area around the village of Caherconlish on the Down Survey maps. Earthworks on the W bank of the Groody River which are visible on OSi orthoimages may be related to the medieval watermill depicted on the Down Survey maps. A linear earthwork running parallel to the river and to the south of the mill site visible on OSi orthophotos may be the remains of a mill race belonging to the mill. See attached images showing the watermill to the SE of Knockatanacashlane and W of Boskill House in Templemichael Compiled by: Martin Fitzpatrick Date upload: 6 July 2020
- LI014-149 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
Pits and linear features were identified during archaeological test trenching carried out by Graham Hull under licence no. 06E0947 prior to a proposed housing development (Hull 2006; Hull 2009, 323). The Geophysical survey (06R0205) and archaeological test trenching revealed archaeological features in trenches 21-29 that were 130m W of a castle (LI014-079007-). The results were summarised as following; ‘The test trenching has established the presence, at the south of the site, of archaeological deposits that are characterised by ditches and pits. The small artefacts assemblage indicates activity dating to the post-medieval period’ (Hull 2006). Finds from the excavation were described as: ‘Some of these features contained pottery and clay tobacco pipe dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. A single sherd of possibly medieval pottery was also found’ (www.excavations.ie 2006, Entry No. 1249).
