- OF017-022 Enclosure
Description
Not visible at ground level. Aerial photographs (GSI, N 509/08) shows potential outline of a circular enclosure. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
- OF025-003 Ritual site - holy well
Description
This natural spring well is now housed in a modern pump house supplying water to the local households. There is no tradition of patterns or any saint associated with this well. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
- OF025-004 Enclosure
Description
No surface remains of any enclosure indicated from GSI aerial photographs (GSI N 509/08) taken in 1973. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
- OF025-005 Castle - unclassified
Description
All that remains of this site is a raised square shaped platform (Dims. 9m E-W by 10m N-S). A curious ridge runs off the Eastern side of the platform, this ridge measures 2.5m wide and may have been the original roadway to the castle. There is no evidence of cut or decorated stone and no evidence of a bawn wall although this may have been located to the east of the castle where the modern orchard is located. The outhouses to the east of the castle displayed no evidence of worked stone from the castle in their walls (O' Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 74-5). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
- OF025-034 Burial ground
Description
Situated atop low rise of ground with good views in all directions. Circular area (diam. c. 42m N-S; 35m E-W) enclosed by a well preserved tree-lined earthen bank (Wth. 2m; int. H. 0.5m; ext. H 0.7m) and external fosse (Wth 3m; ext. D. 0.4m). No clear entrance feature visible. Monument is depicted as a tree-ring and not as an antiquity on the current ed. OS 6-inch map. However on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map this enclosure is shown standing in the S quadrant of a field annotated on the map as 'Burial Field'. It is possible that this enclosure served as a burial ground which then lent its name to the field in which the monument is standing. The enclosure may have been a ringfort that was later used as a burial ground and subsquently converted into a tree-ring. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 16 December 2013
- OF025-036 Enclosure
Description
In pasture atop low gravel ridge, with Newtown Castle (OF025-005----) 300m to WNW. Cropmark of circular shaped area (approx. diam. 15m) defined by a fosse visible on Google Earth orthoimage and on Digital Globe orthophoto taken 2011-13. Depicted as an area of woodland standing in centre of field annotated 'Glen Field' on 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Cropmark of enclosing ditch of woodland plantation visible on aerial images. Could be the remains of a folly/gazebo or a designed landscape feature associated with the woodland plantation. See attached Google Earth orthoimage taken 26/01/2018 Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien based on details provided by Jean-Charles Caillère Date of upload: 12 November 2020
