  Description

  Situated on the E facing slope of a natural rise in undulating countryside. Raised circular area (diam 44m E-W ) enclosed by a gently sloping earthen bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 2m; Wth 2m) with no evidence of an outer fosse. Possible entrance gap (Wth 2.5m) at SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).   Description

  Unlocated castle within the townland of Ballykelly (Loeber 1988 vol. 1, 20). According to Loeber in 1622, Bostock King purchased the lands and castle of Ballinkelly [Ballykealy] from the Earl of Kildare. A pile of stones in a field known locally as 'The Castle Field' may represent the remains of Ballykealy Castle (pers. comm. Brian Pey 28 July 2009). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien.
