- GA061-063 Ringfort - unclassified
Description
On a gentle S-facing slope. Poorly preserved circular rath (D 36m) defined by a bank of earth and stone, overlain by a field bank from NNE to ENE. A gap (Wth 11.3m) at SSW, though enlarged, may be original. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA061-064 Enclosure
Description
On a low ridge in former demesne land, 200m WNW of the site of Runnamead House, a 19th-C mansion. Marked on OS 6-inch maps as a circular tree-planted enclosure. What survives is a very poorly preserved subcircular enclosure (NE-SW 26m), NW-SE 24m defined from S to NW by a curving bank (Wth 2.2m, H 1.35m max.) which is incorporated into a modern field boundary, and elsewhere by a low scarp (H 0.1m). The interior has been cleared. An earthwork (GA061-068----) lay 100m to WSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA061-065 Ringfort - unclassified
Description
In low-lying grassland bordering on marshland to W. Circular rath (D 32m), in fair condition, defined by a bank and external fosse. A scarp forms the enclosing element at NW, and the fosse survives only at NW. An earthwork (GA061-068----) lay 100m to ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA061-066 Ringfort - rath
Description
In level grassland. Poorly preserved subcircular ringfort (E-W 27m, N-S 23m) defined by a stone-faced bank from N to NE and from SSW to NW; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. Possible external fosse indicated by a vegetation band from NE to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA061-067 Quarry
Description
In gently undulating pastureland. A hachured feature marked on the 1915 edition of the OS 6-inch map proved on inspection in 1984 to be a disused water-filled quarry. According to local information, stone from it was used to build Runnamead House, which lies c. 850m to the NNE. As the quarry is of post-AD 1700 date it does not come within the remit of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 17 July 2014
- GA061-068 Designed landscape feature
Description
On a gentle rise in former demesne land. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular tree-filled enclosure (D c. 30m). No visible surface trace survives. There is an enclosure (GA061-064----) 100m to ENE, while a ringfort (GA061-065----) lies 100m to WSW. The site's location, in a straight line between the enclosure and ringfort, might suggest a landscape feature associated with Runnamead House to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
