  Description

  The site (L 1.04m min.; Wth 0.63m; D 0.08m) consists of a band (Wth 0.88m) of light brushwood and twigs orientated E-W overlain by brushwood orientated N-S. As the structure is fragmentary the orientation is not clear. There is a stake located 0.26m S of the main concentration of wood. Metal toolmarks occur on the stake and a piece of brushwood. The wood is in poor condition and set in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with Eriophorum, ericaceous remains and pockets of poorly humified Sphagnum.   Description

  An irregular deposit (L 1.15m min.; Wth 0.26m; D 0.075m) of three pieces of brushwood (av. diam. 0.035m) and two portions of a wooden artefact in opposing drain faces. Metal toolmarks are evident on a worked end. The wood is in good condition and set in poorly humified Sphagnum peat with ericaceous matter. The two unrecovered artefact fragments, together with a third recovered fragment from SMR OF010-114---- (01E0477:1), are parts of a single perforated artefact of ash. SMR OF010-114---- is 14m to the NE and SMR OF010-112---- is 0.15m below SMR OF010-113----. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 2001.   Description

  A dispersed, irregular deposit (L 0.81m min.; Wth 0.71m; D 0.09m min.) of ten pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.011-0.022m) and twigs. Some brushwood and twigs have metal toolmarks on worked ends. The wood is in moderate condition and in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with ericaceous remains and fibrous roots. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 2001. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.   Description

  A deposit (L 1.41m min.; Wth 1.47m; D 0.21m) of twelve pieces of brushwood in dispersed groups in the drain face. The brushwood (diam. 0.02-0.03m) is arranged in groups of two-three pieces across the width of the site with toolmarks present. The wood is in moderate condition and set in poorly humified Sphagnum peat. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 2001. • OF010-491 Structure - peatland
  Description

  This site is located in the industrial peatlands of Daingean South Bog. It was recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a dense cluster of brushwood elements and a single worked roundwood found alongside the drain edge (Whitaker 2014). On excavation in 2014 (licence 14E0309) it was interpreted as a peatland structure, measuring 2.76 x 1.71m. The site was dated cal. AD 423-554 (UBA 26599). A single cutting measuring 3 x 2m was opened. The excavated site consisted of two NW-SE orientated roundwoods, with a concentration of E-W orientated associated brushwood elements. All elements were in poor condition, having been mostly exposed on the field surface. Three chisel-point worked ends with flat facets were noted. The species identified were mainly hazel, with one alder and a radially split oak plank found.   Description

  This site is located in the industrial peatlands of Daingean South Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a single tool-marked brushwood (Diam. 0.03m, L0.022m) located in a drain face 0.13m below the field surface (Whitaker 2014). On excavation in 2014 (licence 14E0308) it was interpreted to be a peatland structure. It was dated to cal. AD 1276-1389 (UBA 26598). A single cutting, measuring 3x2m, was opened. Very little overlying peat remained. The structure consisted of three machine-damaged roundwoods, an associated brushwood, and two short pegs, orientated NE-SW. The elements were irregularly shaped and covered an area measuring 1.48x0.79m. A single chisel point with flat faceted toolmarks was noted. The species identified from three brushwood elements were birch and pomoideae. The site was underlain by poorly humified Sphagnum peat with moss and fibrous plant matter (Whitaker 2017).   Description

  This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Daingean South Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a small brushwood platform partially exposed on the field surface near the drain edge. The elements (Diam. 0.01-0.04m, max. L0.8m) were tightly packed, and were laid two to three layers deep. The majority were orientated NE-SW, with some elements overlying them orientated NW-SE. The site was situated in poor to moderately humified peat with frequent Eriophorum inclusions (Whitaker 2014). The find spot was relocated in 2014 (licence 14E0310), using GPS, but no wood remained in situ (Whitaker 2017). A fragment of ash was chosen for AMS dating and returned a date of cal. • OF010-501 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  This site is located in the industrial peatlands of Daingean South Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a NE-SW orientated plank togher, exposed in two sightings on the field surface and in the drain face of two production fields (Whitaker 2014). An excavation was carried out in 2014 (licence 14E0311). The site remains undated. A single cutting was opened, measuring 5x3m, on the location of Sighting B (OF-DAS051b). The excavations revealed the fragmentary remains of the plank togher, which had been truncated by modern drainage. The site seemed to have originally consisted of two parallel laid radially split oak planks (L0.6-1.05m, W0.1-0.13m, D0.04-0.06m) and an associated longitudinal alder roundwood (Diam. 0.06m, L1.36m). The underlying Sphagnum peat was moderately humified with some fine root inclusions. The site was no longer extant at Sighting A (OF-DAS051a) (Whitaker 2017).
