  Description

  Located on a small hill. This is depicted as a circular wood only on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map. it is shown as attached to an E-W ornamental wood c. 60m to the N that formed part of the ornamental boundary of the demesne of Mullaghmore House, which is in full view c. 200m to the SW. Portion of the perimeter is incorporated into a field bank (Chord 60m N-S) NNE-SSE. Although it is not represented on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map it may be a tree-ring. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 29 August 2017

  Description

  Situated towards the NE end of the oval Mullaghmore Lake (dims c. 380m NE-SW; c. 200m NW-SE) that has shrunk somewhat from its representation on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map (dims c. 500m NE-SW; c. 300m NW-SE). This is a circular overgrown cairn (diam. 28m E-W; 25m N-S) which has evidence of a retaining kerb, and it is located in deep water. Five large oak piles were noted protruding through the cairn on the S side. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 29 August 2017

  Description

  Range of outbuildings adjoining rear (north-west) elevation of Mullaghmore House and surrounding central courtyard, built c.1860. Pitched slate roofs with cast-iron rainwater goods. Recent square rooflights and tooled limestone chimneystacks. Snecked roughly squared limestone walls. Square-headed window openings with tooled stone surrounds, some with block-and-start sandstone surrounds, and tooled sills having timber-framed windows. Some window openings having moulded limestone mullions. Square-headed opening to front with timber glazed door and window opening and canopy over. Square-headed door openings having tooled limestone surrounds and timber panelled door with side and overlights to north-east elevation, timber battened door to south-east elevation, half-glazed timber panelled door to front. Surrounding cobbled courtyard with yard to north-west, surrounded by coursed rubble limestone walls. Triple-centred carriage arch to wall to south-west of courtyard having cut limestone voussoirs on square-profile cut limestone piers, flanking double-leaf wrought-iron gate.

  Description

  Four-bay two-storey house, built c.1860, having gable-fronted end bay with two-storey canted bay window and open-fronted porch to front (south-east) elevation. Adjoining outbuildings to rear (north-west) elevation. Pitched slate roof having two coursed rubble limestone shouldered projecting chimneystacks to front elevation and rectangular-plan limestone chimneystack to end-bay. Cast-iron rainwater goods and timber bargeboards. Coursed squared rubble limestone walls, tooled block-and-start masonry quoins and tooled limestone plinth course. Moulded limestone sill course at first floor level to front and north-east elevation of end bay. Square-headed window openings with tooled limestone sills and surrounds and timber-framed windows. Tooled limestone mullions and chamfered surrounds to windows to front and north-east elevation of end bay. Tripartite window opening to south-west elevation having tooled limestone surround, mullions, sill and ogee-headed moulding set in rectangular recess to centre opening. Square-headed door opening to front with moulded limestone surround, glazed timber door and stained-glass over-light. Door opens onto limestone step and encaustic tiled platform having four nosed render steps to ground. Carved limestone balustrade to open-sided porch with ogee openings having scalloped detail to edges, possibly reused from elsewhere. Single-pitch slate roof with decorative timber bargeboards supported on limestone columns to front. Square-headed tooled limestone doorway surround forming south-west elevation of porch having moulded ogee-headed opening and with label-moulding over having flattened urn mount to eaves at corner. Square-headed door opening to rear with limestone surround and half-glazed timber panelled door having overlight. Squared limestone wall to front of house, and single-leaf pedestrian cast-iron gate to east. Gateway to north-west of house comprising pair of square-plan tooled sandstone piers with render capping and ball finials, flanking double-leaf cast-iron gate, with pedestrian gates to either side.

  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, built c.1850, with attic, gabled porch to front (south-east) elevation, and single-storey return to rear. Pitched slate roof with red brick chimneystack, replacement rainwater goods, and decorative timber bargeboards. Coursed squared limestone and sandstone walls having tooled sandstone block-and-start quoins. Square-headed window openings throughout, with tooled sandstone surrounds, sills, and with timber tracery to ground floor. Render sills and replacement timber windows to attic level. Gauged-brick square-headed window openings to north-east elevation of return having stone sills, red brick surrounds and replacement timber windows. Square-headed replacement door and overlight to porch. Gauged-brick segmental-headed door opening to rear having replacement timber door. Stone and red brick wall surrounding yard to rear with cast-iron single-leaf pedestrian gate.
