• MO025-018 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated at the summit of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793) and on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 40m NNW-SSE; 39m ENE-WSW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H c. 1m; ext. H c. 1.5-2m) and hedge, with a fosse (Wth of base 1.8m; D 0.85m) N-NE that might have been re-cut, and traces of the fosse are also visible ESE-W. The original entrance could be a partially closed gap (Wth of base 2.7m) at SE. The monument is bisected by a NE-SW field bank with a drain on the SE side and the SE side grew oats in 1967 while the other side was in pasture. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
