• MO030-018001 Hilltop enclosure
  Description

  Located on a rise at the summit of a WNW-ESE drumlin ridge. This is a sub-rectangular or D-shaped grass-covered area (dims c. 50m WNW-ESE at S to 71m WNW-ESE at N; 56m NNE-SSW) defined by scarps (at W: Wth 4.2m; 2.8m; at N: Wth 7.5m; H 5m) on all sides except at the E which is the natural approach and where there is an earthen bank (Wth of base 4.4-5.7m; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 1.2-1.7m) but no visible fosse. There is an entrance (Wth of base 4.2m) towards the S end of the bank. In the interior a grass-covered earthen bank (Wth 1.9-2.2m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.4-0.6m) with a stone facing creates an inner D-shaped enclosure (dims 56m WNW-ESE at N; 34m NNE-SSW) backing on to the perimeter at N and E. This inner bank has an entrance (Wth 2.5m) at SW and another (Wth of base 2.3m) towards its E end. There were two hut-site inside the inner enclosure, and three in the outer but some of these have been damaged since 1967. There is also a platform inside the entrance to the hilltop enclosure on the N side. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).   Description

  There were two hut-sites inside the inner enclosure of hilltop enclosure (MO030-018001-), and three in the outer but some of these have been damaged since 1967.   Description

  There were two hut-sites inside the inner enclosure of hilltop enclosure (MO030-018001-), and three in the outer but some of these have been damaged since 1967. This hut-site is situated in the E central part of the inner enclosure of the hilltop enclosure. It is a subrectangular or D-shaped grass-covered area (int. dims 5m WNW-ESE; 4m NNE-SSW) with the straight side aligned NW-SE on the NE side.   There were two hut-sites inside the inner enclosure of hilltop enclosure (MO030-018001-), and three in the outer but some of these have been damaged since 1967. A hut-site was noted inside the NW angle of the outer enclosure in 1967, but it is now visible as a sunken, grass-covered platform (dims 6.8m NNE-SSW; 4.8m WNW-ESE) defined the scarped sides of the hilltop enclosure at W and N and by a scarp down to the interior (Wth 1.3m; H 0.4m) at S and a slight bank (Wth 3m; int. This hut-site is inside the perimeter of the hilltop enclosure at S. It is a circular area (int. diam. 2.2m), the N half of which is overgrown with furze, and it is defined by an earthen bank (at E: Wth of base 2.7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.7m).   Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey hall, built c.1930. Now disused. Rectangular plan with projecting lean-to addition to north end of front (west) elevation. Pitched corrugated-iron roof having three gabled vents projecting from ridge. Corrugated-iron clad walls. Square-headed door openings to front elevation, one with half-glazed timber battened door with carved timber canopy over, one with timber battened door. Square-headed door opening to lean-to addition, having timber battened door. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows with convex horns. Situated on roadside having wrought-iron pedestrian gate and earthen bank with hedgerow forming boundary.
