- WX027-010 Ring-ditch
Description
Located on a low SE-NW spur. Two concentric cropmark rings (max. diam. c. 10m) are visible on aerial photograph (CUCAP: BDP 6). It is not visible at ground level in pasture. Archaeological testing (09E0564) on an extensive area (dims c. 200m NW-SE; c. 140m NE-SW at NW to c. 190m NE-SW at SE) in Glentire townland and c. 130m to the E at the closest point produced no related archaeological material (Nelis 2012). A remote sensing magnetometer survey (18R0065) in advance of a quarry development confirmed the presence of archaeological features at this location (Gimson et al. 2018, 4, M11), and the possible ring-ditch (WX027-010001-) is c. 10m to the SW. This ring-ditch and five other possible ring-ditches will be excluded from the development, but archaeological testing (19E0010) of the rest of the proposed quarry area produced no related archaeological material (Carroll 2019; excavations.ie 2019: 384). Archaeological monitoring (20E0204) by M. Carroll (2020) of topsoil removal in an L-shaped area of c. 3.3 ha to the E and S of the ring-ditches produced no related archaeological material of archaeological features. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 14 March 2016 Amended: 8 April, 2020; 9 November 2022
- WX027-010001 Ring-ditch
Description
Situated on a low SE-NW, and c. 7m SW of the ring-ditch (WX027-010----). A remote sensing magnetometer survey (18R0065) in advance of a quarry development identified (Gimson et al. 2018, 5, M12) three weak signals forming a subcircular enclosure (diam. c. 14-16m) with a possible entrance at N. Two possible pits are within the enclosure and a linear feature extends NW from its perimeter at N and another extends SE from the perimeter at S. This feature will be preserved within a fallow area associated with the ring-ditch (WX027-010----), but archaeological testing (19E0010) of the remaining area produced no related material (Carroll 2019). Archaeological monitoring (20E0204) by M. Carroll (2020) of topsoil removal in an L-shaped area of c. 3.3 ha to the E and S of the ring-ditches produced no related archaeological material of archaeological features. Description
Situated on a low SE-NW. A remote sensing magnetometer survey (18R0065) in advance of a quarry development identified (Gimson et al. 2018, 4, M5) a circular feature (diam. 6-7.5m) defined by a fosse with a central pit. This will be preserved within a fallow area associated with the ring-ditch (WX027-010----), but archaeological testing (19E0010) of the remaining area produced no related material (Carroll 2019). Archaeological monitoring (20E0204) by M. Description
Situated on the NE-facing slope of a low SE-NW spur. A remote sensing magnetometer survey (18R0065) in advance of a quarry development identified (Gimson et al. 2018, 4, M2) an arc of a ditch (diam. 9.5m E-W) E-S-W around a possible large pit (diam. c. 3m). This feature will be preserved within a fallow area associated with the ring-ditch (WX027-010----), but archaeological testing (19E0010) of the remaining area produced no related material (Carroll 2019). Description
Situated on a gentle NE-facing slope of a low SE-NW spur. A remote sensing magnetometer survey (18R0065) in advance of a quarry development identified (Gimson et al. 2018, 4, M1) a ditched enclosure (diam. 10-12m) with an entrance gap (Wth 5m) at N and two internal pits. This feature will be preserved within a fallow area associated with the ring-ditch (WX027-010----), but archaeological testing (19E0010) of the remaining area produced no related material (Carroll 2019). Description
Situated on a low SE-NW. A remote sensing magnetometer survey (18R0065) in advance of a quarry development identified (Gimson et al. 2018, 5, M15) a circular enclosure (diam. 9-9.5m) with an entrance gap (Wth 1.5m) at NW. There is some evidence of another possible enclosure (diam. c. 19m) defined by a slight possible ditch surviving NE-S-SW just to the SW with a second outer ditch c. 2m distant S-SW. This feature will be preserved within a fallow area associated with the ring-ditch (WX027-010----), but archaeological testing (19E0010) of the remaining area produced no related material (Carroll 2019).Archaeological monitoring (20E0204) by M. Description
Originally classified as an enclosure on the basis of an aerial photographs (ASIAP, WX 100, 34-6) but the images are very uncertain. However, an oval enclosure (dims c. 39m E-W; c. 36m N-S) defined by a wide fosse (Wth c. 2-4m) is clearly visible on Google Earth (14/07/2018) as was first reported by Simon Dowling. There could be an entrance gap (Wth c. 3m) at NNE. See the attached enhanced view from Google Earth Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 18 July, 2012 Amended: 6 March 2020
