- GA118-074 Enclosure
Description
In gently undulating pastureland. This overgrown circular enclosure (diam. c. 10m) is defined by a narrow earthen bank (Wth 0.5-0.6m; int. H 0.6-0.8m; ext. H 1.6-1.8m) which is overgrown with trees and piled with field clearance material. A shallow dip at E and W indicates the line of a possible external fosse and a very slight rise from SSE to S an outer bank. The interior slopes toward the centre and is partially overgrown and stony. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 16 August 2019
- GA118-075 Church
Description
Within the S end of a graveyard (GA118-075001-). On inspection in March 1984, this rectangular church (int. dims. 14.2m E-W; c. 4.75m N-S), with a N transcept (ext. dims. 8.1m E-W; 5.25m N-S) was very poorly preserved and heavily overgrown with ivy. It was constructed of roughly cut mortared limestone. None of the walls survived to their original height. The E gable wall (H 2m) of the church and the N wall (H 2.4m) of the transept were the best preserved walls but no architectural features survived. Two breaks in the S wall, one towards the E end (Wth 1.4m) and one towards the W end (Wth 1.6m), may have marked the location of either windows or doorways. Numerous graves dating from the 19th and 20th centuries occupied the interior of both parts. Current aerial imagery (OSi digitalglobe imagery) indicates that the ivy has been removed. - GA118-075001 Graveyard
Description
In pastureland on the S-facing slope of an E-W running esker ridge. This rectilinear graveyard (c. 80m NW-SE; c. 60m NE-SW) is enclosed by a stone wall (H 1m). Access is gained at SSE. The remains of a church (GA118-075----) occupy its S end. Most of the headstones date to the 19th and 20th centuries but a number of uninscribed slabs are visible in the S and NW sectors. According to local information, there is a mass grave associated with the Famine in the N sector. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 6 April 2020
