- MO017-007 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a shelf towards the bottom of a NW-facing slope. This rath is described as ‘Old fort’ in gothic lettering on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map and it is depicted as a hachured feature on the 1907 edition. It is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 34.5m E-W; c. 33m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 1.2-2.2m) SE-W-NE that is incorporated into a field bank and hedge ESE-W-NW. There is no indication of a fosse or of an original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). - MO017-008 Ringfort - rath
Description
Located on a rise towards the bottom of the S-facing slope of an E-W drumlin ridge. This rath is probably the feature depicted on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793) W of Corkeeran townland, and it is depicted on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is an oval grass-covered area (dims 41m N-S; 33m E-W) defined by an earthen bank incorporated into a field bank and hedge (ext. H 1.8m at SE) that is reduced to a scarp overlain by a field wall and hedge WNW-NNE. There is no visible fosse, and the outer face of the bank is stone-lined SE-WNW. Description
Single-arch railway bridge, built c.1855, carrying Great Northern Railway over road. Three-centred arch, having rock-faced rusticated and margined stepped limestone voussoirs, and cut-stone soffit. Tapered projecting buttresses and curved wing walls to abutments to each elevation. Coursed rock-faced rusticated limestone to spandrel walls, abutments and buttresses. Cut limestone blocks to parapet walls. Dressed limestone platbands at impost level and running over arch-ring. Dressed limestone copings to wing-walls, terminating in square-plan piers.
