- MO031-010 Megalithic tomb - unclassified
Description
It is described in gothic lettering as ‘Fin McCool’s Table’ on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map, and the OS Memoirs record that 'it is said that there once was a cromlech and the pieces of rock of which it was composed were not long since destroyed for the purposes of being converted into lime in the kiln at the side of the cliff’ (RIA Box 49, Magheross Parish, p. 22a). No archaeological feature is visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 July 2007
- MO031-011 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated in a low-lying position c. 200m SE of Lough Aphuca, a small circular lake (diam. c. 120m). This is a circular grass and scrub-covered area (diam. 46m N-S; 44m E-W) with mature deciduous trees, which is defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 6-6.4m; int. H 0.8-1m; ext. H 1.6m at N to 2.4m at S). The bank has been quarried away W-NW, and there are traces of grass-covered quarries in the interior at SW and NW. There are several gaps in perimeter but the original entrance is probably that at SSE (Wth of base 2m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 28 July 2017
- MO031-135 Burial ground
Description
Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 03E1255). Fifteen to seventeen inhumation burials in fourteen grave-cuts, some partially stone-lined, were excavated along with a number of disarticulated remains which possibly accounted for a further three to four individuals. The burials were centered on two NNW-SSE lines and a single ENE-WSW line with a single isolated burial c. 10m to the N. All the burials were orientated in an E-W direction, with the heads to the W, and are likely to be from a single extended family. There were six adult males and five adult females with three juveniles. Three calibrated radiocarbon dates range from AD 538-647 to AD 660-773). (Walsh F. 2004c, 9; 2006, 396-7; 2012 94-98) Date of revised upload: 24 July 2017
- MO031-136 Burnt mound
Description
Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 03E1255) and situated on the S bank of a small meandering stream at a point where it changes from a SW-NE to NW-SE flow. The excavation of burnt mound material (dims 9. 5m x 6.25m; max. T 0.4m) revealed no other features which would have been eroded by the stream. It did provide a calibrated C14 date of 1877-1537 Cal. BC. (Walsh 2007; Walsh 2011, 518) Date of revised upload: 27 July 2017
- MO031-137001 Cave
Description
An area in Creevy Cave, known as 'Creevy Rising' was first recorded by cavers in the 1960's, however its archaeological significance wasn't noted until 2009. A possible hearth and post-medieval pottery on an earthen platform (L 6.5m; Wth 4m) defined by stones along with a stone structure (MO031-137002-) were recorded. (Dowd et al. 2011; 36-9) Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 24 June 2011
- MO031-137002 Structure
Description
Discovered in 2009 in Creevy Cave alongside an earthen platform, a possible hearth and post-medieval pottery. A stone structure (L c. 3m; Wth 0.75m; H 1m) which was constructed both above and below ground at an opening into the cave. This opening is now blocked and is only visible as a slight depression above ground. The side walls are composed of small rounded stones and it is roofed with lintel slabs. Its appearance is very similar to a souterrain. (Dowd et al. 2011; 36-9) Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 24 June 2011
