• MO025-021 Megalithic tomb - unclassified
  Description

  Located towards the bottom of a W-facing slope and c. 2m out from a NW-SE field bank on the NE side. It is described in gothic lettering as the site of a ‘Druid’s Altar’ only on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map. The OS Revision Name Book describes this as "A rude flag about 2.25 ft in breadth and 2.5 ft in height, and it is said to have stood over Tubber na Downey or Sunday well (as tradition says) before it (i.e. the well) moved by some spell to the south end of the townland where it still remains' (1857, Sheet 25D, p.9). The stone (L 1.16m; Wth 0.45m; H 0.5m) was parallel with the field bank. A private house was built on this plot c. 40m to the SE before 1995 (OSAP), but archaeological testing (10E0208) in the plot immediately to the SW produced no related material (McGonigle 2010, 2012). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). • MO025-044 Linear earthwork
  Description

  Situated on the ridge of a NW-SE drumlin. It is depicted as a dotted line (L c. 145m) running parallel with and c. 5m SW of a NW-SE field boundary only on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as the site of an ‘Ancient Entrenchment’. Davies (1955, 33) noted that no archaeological feature survived here. It may be part of the Black Pig’s Dyke, and the Drumgristin section (MO025-046----) is c. 700m to the ESE. • MO025-050 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Located towards the bottom of the SE-facing slope of a NW-SE drumlin ridge and c. 65m W of a N-S section of the Fane River. A N-S section of disused railway embankment is just to the E. It is marked only on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as ‘Toberreendowney’ - the little well of the church. The name is also known in the folk tradition (IFC: Schools MSS (931) 375: https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes ), but there is no other record of it. • MO025-052 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Situated on top of and on the SE-facing spine of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This enclosure is not marked on any edition of the OS maps. A large circular enclosure (ext. diam. c. 170m) was identified from a LiDAR survey (pers. comm. Steve Davis). It appears to be a circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 90m) defined by a fosse (Wth of base c. 10m) and outer bank (Wth c. c. 15m). There might be a large entrance at NE. It is divided by a NW-SE field bank on the spine of the ridge with a larger part of the enclosure NE of this bank.
