• MO031-066 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated towards the N end of a NNW-SSE drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea's map of Co. Monaghan (1793). It is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 45m NE-SW: 44.4m NW-SE) that slopes down slightly to the NE and is defined by an earthen bank and hedge (Wth of base 5.4-6.4m; Int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.2-1.6m), with traces of an outer fosse (at NW: Wth c. 3m; D 0.2m) WNW-ENE and E-SE (at SE: Wth 5.3m; ext. D 0.1m). The perimeter is incorporated into a field bank SE-WNW, with an outer drain SE-SSW. There are many gaps in the perimeter but either that at SW or SE (Wth of base 1.5m) is more likely to be the original. Rath (MO031-067----) is c. 220m to the SSE. • MO031-067 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located towards the S end of a NNW-SSE drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793). It is an overgrown circular area (diam. 49m NNE-SSW; int. diam. 40m NNE-SSW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 12m; int. H 1.5m; ext. H 3.5-4m) separated by a U-shaped, water-logged fosse (Wth of top 11-14m; Wth of base 1m at SSW to 4m at NNE; ext. D 1m at SSW to 2.5m at NNE) from an outer earthen bank (Wth of base 8-11m; ext. H 0.7m). The entrance through the inner (Wth of base 2m) and outer (Wth of base 3.2m) banks and a causeway (H 0.7m) are at SSE (max. ext. diam. 88m NNE-SSW). There is an outer field bank ESE-W, and an L-shaped depression inside the inner bank at NW is probably the result of quarrying. The rath (MO031-066----) is c. 220m to the NNW, and the raths (MO031-068----) and (MO031-069----) are on a lower shelf c. 200m to the ENE and c. 230m to the E respectively. • MO031-068 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated just off the crest of a shelf towards the top of the E-facing slope of a NNW-SSE drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793). It was a circular grass-covered area (diam. 23m N-S; 21m WNW-ESE) that is now overgrown and slopes down severely to the E (H 2.2m). It is defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at WNW: Wth 5.6m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.7m) S-W-N (upslope) that is reduced to an external scarp (at ESE: Wth 5.5m H 1.2m) elsewhere. There is an entrance (Wth of base 2.2m) at NW. Rath (MO031-067----) is c. 200m to the WSW and rath (MO031-069----) is c. 60m to the SE.   Description

  Situated at the tip of a small NW-SE spur or shelf towards the top of the E-facing slope of a NNW-SSE drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793). It was a circular grass-covered area (diam. 31.5m N-S; 29.5m E-W) that slopes down to the SE (H 1m) and is now overgrown. It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5.4-6m; int. H 0.4-0.6m; ext. H 1.2-1.5m) and slight traces of an outer fosse (at SE: Wth of top 7.4m; ext. D 0.1m). The entrance (Wth of base 2.5m) is at S. Rath (MO031-067----) is c. 230m to the W and rath (MO031-068----) is c. 60m to the NW. • MO031-070 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located at the S tip of a broad NW-SE spur in a fairly low-lying landscape. It is depicted as an embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 45m) described as a ‘fort’ in gothic lettering on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map, and as a curved field bank NE-SW on the 1907 edition. A field bank (Wth 1.5m; H 1m) and hedge NE-E-SW (Chord c. 50m NE-SW) may incorporate part of the bank but there is no other evidence of an antiquity The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
