Description
Located on the summit of a broad NW-SE drumlin ridge overlooking Greaghlone or Beagh Lough, the S shore of which is c. 270m to the N. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 49m WNW-ESE; 47.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 6-7m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.5m generally to 2.1m at N) and hedge, with a slight and rounded outer fosse, most visible (Wth of top 6.4m; ext. D 0.2m) W-NW. The entrance (Wth of base 2.8m) is at E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 25 August 2017
- MO030-029 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a low NW-SE rise in a fairly low-lying position between drumlins, but overlooking Greaghlone or Beagh Lough, the E shore of which is c. 225m to the W. It is depicted as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’, and as an arc of hachures SE-W on the 1907 edition. The perimeter could be incorporated into a field bank and hedge SE-W (Chord 31m), which is built on a scarp (at SW: H 1.65m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). Description
Detached three-bay two-storey farm house, built c.1800, with shallow gabled windbreak to front elevation, and having single-bay single-storey outbuilding attached to west gable, now renovated and in use as accommodation, and two-bay single-storey outbuilding to west again. Recent two-storey extension to rear. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls, smooth rendered to windbreak. Square-headed window openings having timber sash windows, eight-over-eight pane to front elevation, and varied elsewhere, with fixed and pivoted widows to extension and to outbuildings. Square-headed door opening with timber half-door. Pitched slate roofs to adjoining outbuildings (to west), with stone end chimneystack, rubble stone walls with roughcast render, square-headed openings having timber windows, and timber battened door. Detached two-bay two-storey outbuilding to east having pitched slate roof, lime-washed rubble stone walls, square-headed openings and external staircase to east elevation. Evidence of former pitched-roof outbuilding against north gable. House set back from road with shallow front garden behind lime-rendered boundary walls having wrought-iron gate. Gable of outbuilding to east stands on roadside forming eastern boundary to front garden. Recent boundary wall and gate to yard east of outbuilding.
