• MO029-020 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on the summit of a WNW-ESE drumlin ridge towards its W end. It is depicted as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’, and as an arc of hachures around a NW-SE field bank on the 1907 edition. The perimeter survives incorporated into and around a field bank as a scarp (H c. 1.5m) and outer fosse or drain (Wth 1.5m) SE-W (Chord 23m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 29 August 2017
