- GA104-099 Ringfort - cashel
Description
At E end of a prominent ridge in undulating pastureland. When initially visited in April 1992, this poorly preserved roughly circular cashel (diam. 28m) was defined by a collapsed drystone wall, which was overlain by a later field wall from SE through W to NE. Traces of both inner and outer wall-facing were clearly visible from S through W to N. During a re-inspection in October 2001, it was noted that the interior, particularly the E sector, was being invaded by thorn and briar growth. In 2008 a large outbuilding was erected in the centre of the interior. Ground works prior to its construction resulted in the interior being scarped back to boulder clay and the removal of the cashel wall from N through E to S. Some 60m to the N of a cashel (GA104-100002-). Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 224, no. 55c) as a very ruined 'hut circle (?)' (diam. 14.3m) defined by a wall (Wth 0.91m; H 0.8m). The N part was destroyed as a result of quarrying. No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 24 April 2018
- GA104-100002 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a rise in pastureland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 224, no. 55a) as a circular 'Stone fort' (diam. c. 39m) defined by a collapsed drystone wall. There was a souterrain (GA104-100003-) within the interior and a rectangular house site (GA104-100004-) immediately outside it, to its E (ibid.). No visible surface traces survive. A round house (GA104-100001-) lay c. 60m to N. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 24 April 2018
- GA104-100003 Souterrain
Description
Within a cashel (GA104-100002-). When inspected in March 1983 this drystone-built L-shaped souterrain (L >18m) consisted of two chambers and a blocked-up creep. The 1st chamber (L 7.8m; Wth 2m) was aligned E-W; access to it was gained at its E end. A blocked-up creep was visible in its W wall. The 2nd chamber (L 4.4m; Wth 1.4m) was visible 2m further to the W. It ran NNE-SSW and access to it was gained at its SSW end. On a revisit in October 2001 no visible surface trace of the souterrain was evident. (McCaffrey 1952, 224, no. 55a) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 24 April 2018
