- WX025-032 Moated site
Description
Marked as a subcircular enclosure (dims. c. 50m E-W; c. 40m N-S) only on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated at the bottom of the E-facing slope of Bree Hill with the source of a small N-S stream c. 150m to the E. This is a raised and grass-covered rectangular area (dims. 31m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by scarps at E (Wth 4m; H 0.6m) and S (Wth 6.5m; H 1m), an infilled moat (Wth 12m; D 0.3m) at N and a moat (Wth 3m) connected with field drainage and a field bank at W. Moated site (WX025-033----) is c. 120m to the S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 2 July, 2012
- WX025-033 Moated site
Description
Marked as a rectangular embanked or moated enclosure (ext. dims. c. 60m WNW-ESE; c. 50m NNE-SSW) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is described as a flat platform defined by earthen banks (Wth 1.5m; H 1.5m) with external dry moats (Wth 4.5m; D 2m) and outer banks (H 1m) (Barry 1977, 217, WX 31). It is not visible now at ground level in a harvested cereal crop, but it is visible as a cropmark on an OSI series of aerial photographs (2005). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 2 July, 2012
- WX025-050 Enclosure
Description
Situated on a plateau between Bree Hill c. 1.1 km to the WSW, Carrig Hill c. 950m to the NNW and Ballybuckley hillfort (WX025-034----) c. 450m to the ENE. The cropmark of a circular area (diam. c. 40m) is visible on aerial photographs (MM (62) 15-19). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 2 July, 2012
- WX031-011003 Church
Description
Situated on the S-facing slope of a N-S spur. It is described as 'Old R.C. Chapel' on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6 inch map, but the present church, which is c. 60m to the SE, had been dedicated in 1839, and this building later became a school. A stoup and a stone with the letters ‘R.D’ and the date 1738 (Sheil 1921, 114) that cannot be traced now could indicate the construction date of this building. It is a rectangular structure (int. dims. 19m E-W; 6m N-S), originally with four pointed windows on each long wall and one entrance, probably at the W. It was adapted as a school by inserting a central partition and adding two porches on the S wall, and it is now used for storage. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 27 August, 2012
