- DG080-020001 Penitential station
Description
Located in poor rocky land on the floor of Glencolumbkille valley. Indicated on the 1907 OS 6-inch map as 'Penitential Station', this subcircular cairn (diam. 3.8m; H 0.65m high) served as a prayer station on St. Columbkille's Turas. It is composed of small to medium-sized field stones, and surrounds the base of a cross-inscribed pillar (DG080-020002-). It is partly grassed-over. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 8 March 2019
- DG080-020002 Cross-inscribed pillar
Description
A cross-inscribed pillar-slab (DG080-020002-) 1.11m in height. The decoration is on the NE face (.18m wide). It consists of a central stem connecting a quartered-circle motif on top to a roundel motif on the bottom. This seems to be a larger version of the motif on one of the cross-slabs in the enclosure at Straid (DG080-013008-). The slab is surrounded by a subcircular cairn (DG080-020001-) 3.8m in diameter and 0.65m high. It is located in poor rocky land on the floor of Glencolumbkille valley. This is a National Monument (No. 139 (2)) in state guardianship. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). - DG080-026001 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diam. 16.35m N-S, 14.45m E-W. A subcircular area enclosed by the grassed-over remains of a stone wall. The wall facings are evident at some points and at the W suggest an original width of 1.8m. A modern wall is built on the older foundation along the entire E half. Just SE of the centre is a triangular piece of rock outcrop (DG080-026002-) .95m × 0.95m × 0.9m, .42m high. A depression .2m × 0.17m, depth .08m is crudely carved in this. The site is located on a knoll of rock outcrop on the SW part of the Glen-columbkille valley floor. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' - DG080-031 Cairn - ring-cairn
Description
Situated on NW facing slope of poorly drained moorland overlooking the village of Cashel/Glencolumbkille to the NW. In area of reclaimed bogland the remains of a circular area (diam. 7.05m E-W; 6.7m N-S) defined a double row of contiguous orthostats with evidence of cairn material (Wth 0.75m) between the inner and outer row of orthostats. Approximately 18 orthostats survive of the inner kerb with the height varying from 0.5m to 0.2m. The orthostats of the inner and outer kerb are best preserved at ENE where there is evidence of cairn material between the inner and outer kerbstones There is no clear evidence of an entrance feature which would argue against a hut site classification, although this classification cannot be definitely ruled out. However there is a gap (Wth 2.65m) in the row of orthostats at NE which may be the result of robbing or may mark an entrance feature. If this was an original entrance feature it would suggest that this kerbing belongs to a hut-circle rather than a ring-cairn. The poorly preserved remains suggest that this may be the remains of a possible ring-cairn that has been exposed as a result of land improvement works where the heather covered sod has been removed.
