- WX048-112 Windmill
Description
Situated on top of a broad, low hill, but not marked on the 1839 or 1940 eds of the OS 6-inch map. The terrier or commentary of the Down Survey (1656-8) parish map of Tacumshin in NLI (ms 725; microfilm: P 7384, N 6380) mentions a windmill at Ballytory. The SW half of a cylindrical tower (int. diam. 2.87m; H c. 4m) survives as its NE half was incorporated into a building. A blocked doorway (Wth 0.65m; H 1.75m) survives at SE. There is a rebate to support the first floor and there were windows at the first and second floors at W. A house abuts it at SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). Description
Situated on a fairly level landscape. The cropmarks of old field boundaries represented by single ditch features in an area of c. 42 acres (c. 17 ha) are visible on aerial photographs (CUCAP, BOD 74 9; ASIAP (4) 21-25; 29-34). The fields are subrectangular (dims c. 120m x c. 60m) and laid in strips running NW-SE. Some enclosures appear to be related to the fields. Description
Situated on a fairly level landscape. The cropmark of a sublcircular enclosure (dims c. 35m x c. 30m) defined by a wide fosse feature has a wide opening (Wth c. 10m) at E is visible on aerial photographs (CUCAP, BOD 74 9; ASIAP (4) 21-25; 29-34). Description
Situated on a fairly level landscape. The cropmark of a subcircular enclosure (dims c. 35m x c. 30m) defined by a single fosse feature is visible on aerial photographs (ASIAP (4) 21-5). The perimeter is incorporated into a drain from the field system (WX048-041----) at NE and is very faint E-S, while it overlies or is overlain by the perimeter of enclosure (WX048-041001-) at W.
