- TS081-058001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
Description
On a SE-facing slope, just off the crest of a hill in rolling pasture. Large irregularly-shaped enclosure (diam. 190m NE-SW; 170m E-W), roughly circular with straight side to S with possibly associated burials (TS081-058004). It encloses the crest of the hill, with a steep fall to the S and SE. There is no visible trace above ground of the small enclosure (TS081-058003-) roughly centrally placed in the interior. A yew tree was standing in the interior in living memory but is now gone. The W side of the enclosure is defined by a stone wall (1m H x 1m T), otherwise the enclosure is delimited by a low earthen bank surmounted by hedgerow. Power (1908, 73) refers to this enclosure as the site of an early church (TS081-058002-). It is visible on an aerial photograph (GSI May 1977 S. 690/1). - TS081-058002 Church
Description
On a SE-facing slope just off the crest of a hill, in rolling pasture. Power (1908, 73) refers to an early church site at this location based on the townland name ‘Killinure’, which means the ‘Church of the Yew Tree’. The possible church site is enclosed by a large sub-circular field which may be an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS081-058001-) with associated burials (TS081-058004-). There is no visible trace of the church above ground. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 15 January 2014
- TS081-058003 Enclosure
Description
On a SE-facing slope just off the crest of a hill, in rolling pasture. According to Power (1908, 73) a church (TS081-058002-) was located within the ecclesiastical enclosure and burials (TS081-058004-) have been noted in this field. A sub-circular enclosure (diam. c. 27m) is depicted on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map, roughly centrally located within a larger ecclesiastical enclosure (TS081-058001-). Only the S half of the enclosure is indicated on the current (1904-05) ed. Power (1908, 73) refers to 'Traces (an arc of about thirty yards) of the ancient circular fence are apparent in the neighbourhood of an old thorn-tree near centre of the field'. There is no visible trace of this enclosure above ground. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 15 January 2014
- TS081-058004 Burial
Description
On a SE-facing slope just off the crest of a hill, in rolling pasture. According to Power (1908, 73) this is the location of an early church (TS081-058002-). It appears to be located within a large ecclesiastical enclosure (TS081-058001-). In c. 1990 the landowner came across a lot of small bones while ploughing the field and decided to leave the field under grass. It is likely that these are burials (TS081-058004-) associated with the church. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 15 January 2014
