• MO017-073 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a small W-E spur towards the bottom of the E-facing slope of a drumlin and within view of the site of Newbliss House, which is c. 440m to the NE. A circular enclosure (ext. diam. c. 25m) is depicted on the line of the straight W perimeter of a D-shaped wood (dims c. 90m N-S; c. 80m E-W) on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This is a grass-covered circular area (diam. 29m E-W; 27m N-S) defined by a grass-covered earthen bank (at ENE: Wth of base 2.2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.4m) that survives best N-E-S, and traces of an outer fosse of drain (at ENE: Wth 1.3m; D 0.2m). An entrance is not identified and old tree stumps are present.   Description

  Situated on top of a drumlin and within view of the site of Newbliss House, which is c. 240m to the NNE. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 45m E-W; 43.9m N-S) defined by a grass-covered earthen bank (at S: Wth of base 2.5m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.4m) with some bushes that is best preserved at SE, where there is an external drain (Wth 1.1m D 0.2m). The original entrance is not identified but the most likely is at NNW (Wth of base 1.8m), and there were old trees stumps in the interior in 1969. A grass-covered depression (dims c. 10m N-S; c. 4m E-W) in the N interior is not likely to be a souterrain. Although it is depicted as a large tree-riing on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map, it is probably a rath in origin. Revised by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 9 May 2018

  Description

  Located at the summit of a drumlin and at the SE angle of a wood. This enclosure would have been within view of Newbliss House, c. 450m to the NW before a wood was established on the NW-facing slope of the hill before 1834 (OS map). This is a circular, grass-covered and domed area (diam. c. 27m) that is planted in beech trees. It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2-4m; int. H 0.5m; ex.t H 1.5m), which forms the boundary with Teer townland N-S-W, but the bank is barely present W-N within the wood. The bank survives best SE-W and there are slight traces of an outer fosse, which is particularly evident at SW. An original entrance is not identified.   Description

  Entrance gateway, erected c.1860, to now demolished Newbliss House. Comprises two pairs of panelled rendered piers with plinths and stepped pyramidal caps, decorative cast-iron double-leaf vehicular gate flanked by similar single-leaf pedestrian gates, cast-iron railings to south side on curved plan atop cut limestone plinth. Detached two-bay single-storey L-plan gate lodge to west with single-bay addition to south, pitched slate roof with smooth rendered chimneystack, brackets to eaves, cast-iron rainwater goods, roughcast rendered walls with smooth rendered block-and-start quoins and plinth, square-headed openings with replacement fittings.

• Newbliss Church (Killeevan), church/chapel, 1840–1845 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Church of Ireland church, built 1841, having two-stage entrance tower with belfry and needle spire, single transept to north, and vestry to south. Pitched fibre-cement slate roof, re-roofed c.1990, with terracotta ridge tiles, cut-stone copings to gables, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Octagonal-plan cut-stone chimneystack to vestry. Random-coursed rubble limestone walls, except for belfry to tower, with cut-stone eaves course and angle buttresses. Bottom stage of tower gabled to each face, formerly pinnacled. Single-light lancet windows to nave and west face of tower, and triple-light with round-headed lights to east gable and to transept, having cast-iron lattice windows. Blind roundels to second stage of tower, with hood-mouldings. Pointed-arch louvred openings to each face of belfry. Elliptical-headed latticed window to vestry. Pointed-arch door opening to north face of tower, with double-leaf timber panelled door with decoratively carved details, set in carved stone surround, with cast-iron bootscrape. Square-headed timber battened door to vestry. Interior has gallery, vaulted plaster ceiling with ribs and bosses, plain pine pews, plain timber communion rails, and ornate timber pulpit, carved stone baptismal font, and some marble wall plaques. Balcony supported on clustered cast-iron columns. Sandstone flags to floor of vestibule. Cantilevered sandstone open-well staircase with wrought-iron uprights and ramped timber handrail. Ladder to south side, with lean-to slate coping. Mausoleum accessed via tunnelled entrance situated beneath transept. Driveway from public road through gateway with cut-stone piers having gable detail to all faces, and cast-iron double-leaf gates with quadrant cut-stone walls with copings. Site bounded by bank and hedging.
