Recorded monuments
- GA113-147 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a gentle NE-facing slope in pastureland and rock outcrop. This subcircular cashel (33.5m E-W; 30m N-S), in fair condition and partially obscured by overgrowth, is defined by two collapsed grassed-over drystone walls and an intervening fosse. The fosse and outer wall survive only from SE to S. In the centre of the interior is a rectangular house (GA113-147002-), to the W of which lies a souterrain (GA113-147001-). A stone-lined hollow, possibly a limekiln, is visible in the SE sector. A field wall cuts across the cashel from ENE to W and another wall, running N-S, cuts across its NW quadrant. (McCaffrey 1952, 276, no. 2) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 17 January 2018
- GA113-147001 Souterrain
Description
Within the W half of the interior of a cashel (GA113-147----). This drystone-built souterrain (L >15.4m) is roughly T-shaped in plan. It consists of two chambers and a creep. The 1st chamber (L 7.8m; Wth 1.6m; H 1.3m) runs WSW-ENE. Access is gained at its ENE end. Foundation stones extending beyond the access point suggest that the chamber extended further to the ENE. A blocked-up creep (L 0.7m; Wth 0.6m; H 0.45m) extends from near the W end of its S side-wall. This most likely leads to the 2nd chamber (L 7.8m; Wth 1.6m; H 1.85) which runs NW-SE. Access to this chamber is now gained through a gap in the roof. The foundations of a rectangular house site (GA113-147002-) overlie the SE corner of the 1st chamber. - GA113-147002 House - indeterminate date
Description
Within the interior of a cashel (GA113-147----), just to the W of centre. This rectangular house site (10m E-W; 4m N-S) is defined by a double-faced wall of large blocks only one to two courses high. Its W end partially overlies a souterrain (GA113-147001-). (McCaffrey 1952, 276, no. 2) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 18 January 2018
- GA113-149 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a gentle rise in undulating pastureland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 276-7, no. 3) as a circular ‘Stone fort’ (diam. c. 23.7m), the E half of which was destroyed. The W half was entirely obscured by rubble and overgrowth but the external wall-face was visible. On inspection only a low arc of loose stones, covered with field-clearance rubble, was evident at W. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 18 January 2018
- GA113-150 Ringfort - unclassified
