Description
Freestanding irregular-plan double-height Roman Catholic church, built 1978, having a raised central section with lower sections adjacent to north-west and south-east, projecting entrance porch to main elevation, projection chapel to rear, side entrance porches to south side of central section, sacristy attached to north-east, freestanding tower to east of main elevation. Pitched artificial slate roofs, oversailing at eaves with purlins expressed at gables below timber barges, roof to main section having deep timber fascia and clerestorey glazing infilling space above lower neighbouring roof pitches, tall metal cruciform finial to ridge. Flat roof to entrance porch with pitched central section over entrance, flat roof to sacristy, boiler room and side porches, tall rendered chimneystack to boiler room, uPVC rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls having raised render eaves course and recessed plinth, stone cladding to entrance porches. Cut-stone date plaque to front elevation reading ‘THIS CHURCH OF/ST.FELIMS BALLINAGH/WAS DEDICATED ON 2ND JULY 1978/BY THE MOST REV.FRANCIS McKIERNAN/BISHOP OF KILMORE/REV.ANTHONY SMITH P.P./REV.MICHAEL COOKE C.C.’. Vertical windows to entrance gable with angled heads, square-headed windows elsewhere, having patent reveals and precast concrete sills. Metal windows, some with decorative glass infill. Triangular-headed main entrance having glazed timber doors and screen. Side entrance doors having glazed timber doors. Freestanding square-plan belfry tower having pyramidal copper roof, rendered exterior punctuated by horizontal channels and crucifix attached to south-east elevation, louvered openings to sides of tower head. Church interior with centrally placed raised octagonal altar platform. Roof beams supported on square-profile columns standing close to perimeter with side brace, sheeted timber ceiling infill. Horse-shoe-shaped opening to chapel to north. Carved timber altar furniture and timber pews. Church surrounded by nineteenth and twentieth century grave markers and set back from road and bounded by rendered wall with stone-clad piers.

Detached five-bay single-storey former dispensary, built c.1930, having projecting flat-roofed entrance porch and recessed end bay to north-east, two-bay flat roofed extension to south-west. Now disused. Hipped-slate roof with clay ridge tiles, red brick chimneystacks, sections of cast-iron rainwater goods with moulded hopper head, cut-stone coping to entrance porch. Red brick Flemish-bonded walls, window openings with cut-stone lintels and sills. Boarded windows, one visible one-over-one timber sash to front and remnants of multiple pane timber casement to rear. Sheeted timber doors to both sides of entrance porch. Set slightly back from road, railings removed.

Terraced three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, having late nineteenth-century timber shopfront inserted to ground floor. Pitched replacement slate roof, replacement rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls. One-over-one timber sash windows and stone sills to first floor. Shopfront comprising central recessed entrance incorporating half glazed boletian panelled door with glazed overlight and tiled floor to recess, flanked by display windows with colonnette to corners on rendered stall risers, and having outer fluted timber pilasters supporting plain fascia terminated by carved foliate consoles. Blank wall to rest of ground floor with openings removed. Opens directly on to street.

Pitched replacement slate roof, rendered chimneystacks to gables and ridge, replacement rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls with raised stucco quoins and plinth. Openings having stone sills with uPVC replacement windows. Timber shopfront comprising two display windows over rendered stall risers and having decorative coloured transom lights, flanking pair of timber half-glazed double-doors with decorative overlight. Replacement timber door to dwelling entrance to south side of shopfront with decorative coloured overlight. Enrtance and shopfront linked by plain fascia terminated by carved foliate consoles and supported by pilasters with fluting to lower shaft. Ornamental metal screen railings with scrolls to shop door and windows. Opening directly on to street.

Freestanding gable-fronted single-cell Methodist church, built c.1820, having three-bay nave with recent single-bay gable-fronted extension to north, c.1970. Now disused. Pitched roof with overhanging roof support on brackets with carved ends, timber bargeboards with carved ends, sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with raised smooth rendered plinth. Round-headed window openings with stone sills having uPVC replacement windows. Round-headed door opening to nave having replacement sheeted timber door and approached by steps with rounded corners, cut limestone step to threshold. Set back from the road with cast-iron gate and railings on low stone plinth.

Pitched slate with remains of cresting terracotta ridge tiles, brick chimneystack to south gable with stepped collar bands, tall brick chimneystack to north gable with intermediary collar bands, sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Ruled-and-lined rendered walls having continuous strip quoins. Window openings with stone sills and one-over-one timber sash windows. Recessed door opening having replacement timber door and overlight. Opens directly on to street.

Recessed door openings having limestone step and replacement timber doors with overlights. Square-headed carriage arch having recent sheeted metal door. Roughcast rendered walls to gable and rear elevations. Rendered boundary walls to north side of rear garden.

Pitched slate roof, rendered chimneystacks to gables and ridge having stepped collars, sections of square-profile cast-iron rainwater goods. Ruled-and-lined rendered walls with raised smooth plinth and quoins. Window openings with tripartite arrangement flanking central bay, all with one-over-one timber sashes and stone sills. Stucco detail over window openings comprising shallow pediments on square projecting profiles with channel recessws to front and sitting on a flat stucco hood-like-profile surrounding upper part of openings, square stucco tags to tails of hoods. Rendered V-profile mullions separating windows with raised stucco field to top of Vs having stucco tags below. Door opening with replacement door and decorative overlight. Stucco motif over door opening matching windows but with fluting to wide drop-surrounds. Unadorned window openings to two-bay gable elevation. Opens directly on to street.

Detached Classical five-bay two-storey former market house, built 1821, having three central recessed bays beneath oversailing roof. Now in use as outbuilding. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles, sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls to outer bays with stone plinth, quoins, and plat band. Roughcast rendered walls to first floor of recessed bay with central limestone stone plaque having cornice profile and guttae to bottom corners. Plaque reads, ‘This MARKET HOUSE was Erected by/JAMES STEWART FLEMING Esq./of BELVILLE/A:D.1821’. Limestone ashlar walls to ground floor central recessed bays, with plat band continuing to flanking bays. Projecting bays with square-headed opening to first floor and round-headed opening and niche to ground floor. Stone sills. Recessed bays having stone-dressed oculi to first floor and three segmental-arched openings to ground floor. Timber fittings to first floor openings and replacement fittings to ground floor openings. Set back from street line with former market square to front.
