  Description

  Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 38m) enclosed by a low earthen bank and a shallow fosse identifiable only at NW. Perimeter has been destroyed at W as a result of the construction of a modern dwelling-house. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995).   Description

  The font from Nobber, Co Meath (ME005-071005-), described as a bowl-shaped vessel (ext. diam. 0.42m; int. diam. 0.34m; D 0.18m) that narrowed to the base (diam. 0.26m) and had two lug handles (Roe 1968, 125), was moved c. 1990 from the Church of Ireland church at Nobber, to St. Ernon’s Church of Ireland church at Kingscourt, Co. • St Ernan's Church of Ireland Church, church/chapel, 1775–1785 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Gothic-Revival Church of Ireland church, built 1780, with three-bay nave, chancel to north, and four-stage tower with side bays to south. Pitched slate roof, hipped to south and chancel, terracotta ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Stone barges with corbelled kneelers to flanking gables of tower. Random-coursed rubble stone walls with limestone quoins, and ruled-and-lined render to front side bays of tower. Crenellated parapet with ball finials to tower supported on rounded string course set on block corbels, pointed arch opening with louvers to four sides of third stage of tower, roundels with louvers to second stage, each divided by limestone stringcourses and quoins to the sides. Punched ashlar to first stage of tower with flanking ashlar piers. Pointed arch opening to upper level of first stage with stained glass and limestone sill. Pointed arch door opening with stone surround and timber battened door, keystone to door features head sculpture and date ‘1780’. Stone quatrefoil surrounds to upper level of flanking bays, with blind truncated pointed arches to sides, pointed arch windows to ground floor to front and sides. Bipartite pointed arch window openings with limestone surrounds, switch tracery and leaded lattice windows to west elevation of nave, stained glass windows, inserted c.1980, to east elevation. Tripartite pointed arch window to apse with elaborate stained glass. Single hall nave interior with exposed timber king-post truss ceiling, pointed arch opening to chancel. Bowed timber gallery with panelled balustrade supported on scalloped capital posts. Timber panelled double doors in pointed arch opening with switch tracery to fanlight over. Decorative timber wainscotting in chancel. Original timber altar railings, lectern, altar, pews, and pulpit in-situ. Church set within graveyard with rubble stone boundary walls to street. Wrought-iron double-leaf gates to west with square-profile piers and round stone finials on stone cappings. Pedestrian gate to north of main gate with stone dressings to opening and wrought-iron gate.

  Description

  Detached Victorian L-plan two-bay two-storey former school master’s house, built c.1890, with projecting gable to front elevation and to south-west, and single-storey lean-to to north-west elevation. Now in use as private house. Hipped slate roof, except at two gables, with red brick chimneystack, catslide roof over entrance to west of main gable, pitched slate roof to projecting gable, and replacement slate roof to lean-to extension. Plain timber bargeboards to gables, bracketed eaves course, and cast-iron and replacement rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with brick quoins. Brick flat-arches to openings with replacement sliding sash windows, all with stone sills. Replacement timber door to front entrance with brick flat-arch over. Yard to rear enclosed by low rubble stone wall and having remains of small lean-to outbuilding. Square-profile rendered gate piers with wrought-iron double gates to entrance.

  Detached Victorian three-bay single-storey former school, built 1886, with projecting gable to front having separated side entrances to each classroom. Now in use as private dwelling. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, cast-iron rainwater goods, and two red brick chimneystacks on rear pitch of roof. Exposed random rubble wall to front elevation, roughcast rendered walls to remainder elevations, with red-brick quoins. Name and date plaque to entrance porch reading ‘Cabra School 1886’. Fixed nine-pane timber window to either side of front elevation, six-pane timber casement windows to porch, all with red brick reveals and chamfered stone sills. Graduated triple pointed arch window opening to gable end walls with pointed arch multiple pane timber casements and stone sills. Replacement timber casement window to rear elevation with concrete sills. Replacement timber doors to entrance porch with red brick surrounds to opening reveals, limestone jamb-stones, timber sheeted doors, and sandstone steps. Sandstone circular perforated drain to either side of porch. Rubble stone boundary walls flanking wrought-iron pedestrian gates with brick piers and pyramidal cappings.
