- MA039-047 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, on the gentle S-facing slope of a N–S ridge. A broad expanse of bog lies 100m to E. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 25-30m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.5-4m; int. H 0.6-0.8m; 0.7m at N, 1.2m at W). The bank has a low, broadly slumped internal face. There is a gap (Wth 2m) in the bank at ESE, and another (Wth 2m) at SW. On the E arc the bank has been adapted to serve as a field fence. The rath perimeter is ringed with hazel and hawthorn trees. The interior is obscured by an impenetrable thicket of blackthorn and brambles. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 February 2020
- MA039-048 Enclosure
Description
In pasture, located on the narrow top of a N–S ridge which provides good views in all directions. This possible enclosure is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; on the 1930 edition, a D-shaped area (c. 25m N–S; c. 25m E–W) is outlined by a dashed line, bordered on the straight side to W by a N–S field boundary. The outline of the D-shaped area can no longer be traced. At the location is an area of disturbed ground incorporating an irregular-shaped depression (c. 12m NE–SW; 4-6m NW–SE; D 0.8m), partly infilled with stones, and with hazel trees growing in and around it. The N–S field boundary on its W side has been removed. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 27 January 2020
- MA039-071 Crannog
Description
In a flat expanse of wet pasture, formerly a lake, which is named Ballybeg Lough on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. This possible crannog is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular island, named ‘Gull Island’, located in the centre of Ballybeg Lough; by the time of the 1930 edition, the lake had been drained and the island is not shown. It consists of a low, subcircular grass-covered rise or platform (15.4m E–W; 14.5m N–S) defined by a low, broadly sloping scarp (H 0.4-0.5m), and is distinguished by a covering of rich green grass which differs from the surrounding rough bog sedges. A band (Wth 3m) of rushes encircles it. The platform appears to be composed of peaty soil incorporating some stones, but no features are visible to definitively confirm that it is an artificial construction rather than a natural island. A few hawthorn, holly and willow bushes grow around the perimeter. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 March 2020
