Description
Located towards the SE end of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 26.4m NNW-SSE; 26.4m ENE-WSW) defined by an earthen bank (at NNW: Wth of bank 3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1m) with some bushes , and an outer fosse (at ENE: Wth of top 2.4m; Wth of base 1.7m; int. D 2.3m; ext. D 0.4m) N-SE. There is an entrance gap at SE that has been widened (Wth of base 3.4m) but which is probably original. A NNW-SSE field bank that was just to the W has been removed since 1995 (OSAP). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 8 December 2017
- MO028-105 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated towards the bottom of the E-facing slope of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 30.4m WNW-ESE; c. 30m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at WNW: Wth 7m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 1.6m) and a slight fosse (at WNW: Wth of base 1.6m; D 0.3m) that survive SE-W-NE. The perimeter is reduced to a grass-covered scarp (at ESE: H c. 4m) NE-SSE (L c. 25m) that merges into the natural slope. The original entrance is not identified but it may have been in the E sector. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). Description
Rectangular-plan limestone lime kiln having buttressed corners and two flues with fire openings, built c.1850, built into a bank to rear (south), now defunct. Rubble stone walls, dressed and snecked stone to buttresses. Round arches to both fire openings,with red brick voussoirs and soffits. Exposed rock face below rubble stone wall to rear west side. Set back from road. Detached single-bay single-storey ancillary building to west of kiln, dated 1862, having pitched slate roof, roughly dressed stone walls, rendered walls to central recess to north elevation. Rubble stone boundary walls and pier, one recent rendered pier and recent gate.
