Description
Situated in Castlecosby Lough. Davies (1942, 20; ITA Survey 1942) described a mound c.1.5m above the water-level with 0.9m of this depth comprising habitation refuse, stones and packwork. He also noted that it contained a superimposed cobbled floor and sherds of what appeared to be medieval pottery. Not located. Description
Reputedly the site of 'Bunraskeen Castle', a 16th-century structure with two flanking towers formerly positioned at the corners of the yard of 'Castle Cosby' house (Davies 1948a, 97). All that survives is the S portion of the SW tower (int. diam. c. 2.2m) built of roughly coursed limestone masonry. Late medieval stone head in modern dwelling-house nearby (CV025-063002-). A castle at Cavatt (73) is not marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) map of Kilmore parish. Description
Built into the wall of a modern dwelling-house, c. 30m SSE of the remains of a 16th-century castle (CV025-063001-). The head has a pointed chin, a flattened nose am slightly bulging eyes and is late medieval in date. A largely ploughed-out, slightly raised circular area (int. dims. 44.6m N-S; 42.5m E-W) enclosed by the remains of an earthen bank and a fosse which is identifiable only at NE. Description
Raised circular area (int. dims. 45m NNE-SSW; 44.5m WNW-ESE) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep fosse. Large break in the bank with accompanying causeway at ESE probably represents original entrance. Interior slopes quite steeply to SE. Description
This rath has been ploughed out but its outline is clearly visible. It comprises a slightly raised circular area (int. diam. 34m) enclosed by an earthen bank and a fosse. From W-SSW the perimeter has been destroyed by a long, narrow bank with a trench on either side planted with trees. Original entrance not recognisable. Description
Detached single-bay single-storey former gate lodge, built c.1800, segmental bow added 1856 to avenue elevation, large single-storey extension c.1970 to south-east connected by glazed link. Pitched slate roof, with scalloped slates and overhanging eaves to rounded bow end. Lead-roll ridge and hip with evidence of removed central chimneystack. Smooth rendered walls with channel-jointed pilaster quoins. Three round-headed window openings to bow, central opening originally a door, having moulded surrounds lugged at sill and impost with vermiculated keystones extendind up to soffit of eaves. Roughcast rendered walls to rear having square-headed openings. Replacement aluminium windows to openings. Entrance relocated to extension. Set inside gates to demesne of former Castle Cosby, back from roadside with blank elevation to road. Channelled rendered square-profile gate piers surmounted by urns, flanking decorative cast-iron gates with finials and husks, with aligned railings of similar pattern extending to smaller outer piers. Sweep walls extend in two sections from outer piers to road. Low square-profile roughcast rendered piers to roadside surmounted by cut-stone capstone and carved stone lions, south capstone having raised shield with date 1856 in raised interlaced numerals.
