Recorded monuments
- TN034-089 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated in pasture on a fairly steep SE-facing slope in an upland area with a nearby ringfort (TN034-088) to the N. A circular area (diam. 35m N-S; 34m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1.7-4m; int. H 1.35m; ext. H 0.85m) which has been levelled in the NW quadrant. Stone revetment from a later field boundary is visible in the E sector. No fosse or entrance feature visible. Wall-footings of a nineteenth-century rectangular house attached to the W side of the enclosure indicate possible reuse as a garden boundary. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
- TN040-005 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on the NE-facing slope of a hill, surrounded by meadow. An oval-shaped area (diam. 41.5m N-S; 23m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.4m; int. H 1.15m; ext. H 1.65m), a U-shaped fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.6m) and outer bank (Wth 1.4m; ext. H 0.8m). The N portion is transected by a stone wall extending E-W from the inner bank at W to the fosse at E. The W portion of the outer bank has been levelled, though the fosse is still intact. The interior is heavily overgrown with ferns and the inner bank is covered in scrub and whitethorn bushes. A small amount of quarrying has taken place in the external SW quadrant up to the outer edge of the inner bank.
- TN040-007 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on the E-facing slope of a rise in undulating pastureland. A small circular enclosure (diam. 26.3m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1m; int. H 1m; ext. H 0.7m) with evidence of stone revetment. On the current (1903) ed. OS 6-inch map field boundaries are depicted abutting the site in the SE, SW and NW quadrants and encompassing the circuit of the ringfort. Though these field boundaries have been removed they may account for the stone facing on the bank. No visible evidence of a fosse or entrance feature.
