• TS052-041001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On top of high ground in grassland with good panoramic views in all directions. Possible enclosure (TS052-041002-) c. 40m to S; small enclosure (TS052-063----) 390m to SW and large enclosure (TS052-047----) 840m to SW. Impressive raised platform (diam. 37m N-S; 27m E-W ) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (top Wth 2.2m; base Wth 7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 2-3m), fosse (base Wth 2.6m; top Wth 7.5m; ext. D 1m ) and outer bank (top Wth 1.3m; base Wth 6.7m; ext. H 1m). There is a hollow depression in SW face of platform may be the remains of an old quarry. Evidence of extensive quarrying around base of ringfort with two quarry holes one to the N and S of the ringfort. Old field boundaries visible to S, W and E of ringfort survive as grass-covered low earthen banks, remains of boundaries as depicted on first ed. OS 6-inch map. Enclosing bank around platform destroyed from NE through E to SE and reduced to a scarp on the W side. Fosse and outer bank best preserved at S and N. Later field boundary encloses base of platform on the W side while the E side all enclosing elements are destroyed. Hill is known locally as 'Cruachan Hill' which was partially levelled around 1975 where damage was caused from NE to E side (Cahill 1975). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Earthworks identified as cropmark on an aerial photograph (GSI S. 591/2, 16.4.1974) immediately NE of the ringfort. These are not visible at ground level. • TS052-043 House - 17th century
  Description

  On an E-facing slope of rising ground in grassland with good views in all directions, overlooking the River Suir to N and E. No surface remains visible of any dwelling in area marked on six inch OS 6-inch map. Marked as 'Site of Old Ho.' on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map. • TS052-047 Enclosure
  Description

  On flat grassland with good views in all directions. Nearby enclosure (TS052-063----) 450m and ringfort (TS052-041----) 840m to NE. Monument consists of a large circular area (int. diam 160m N-S; 110m E-W) enclosed by a well-preserved flat-topped earth and stone bank (top Wth 3.5m; base Wth 5.1m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.2m) and outer fosse (base Wth 4m; top Wth 6m; ext. D 1.1m) and entrance gap (Wth 4.4m) at S. Bank reduced to a scarp along W side of enclosure which runs parallel to a small stream. On latest ed. OS 6-inch map monument is depicted as a D-shaped enclosure with annexe to N of enclosure, however, the bank which divides the annexe from the interior has been levelled. The annexe to the N may be the remains of 19th-century field boundaries which were added onto the N side of the large enclosure. Originally the enclosure may have consisted of a D-shaped enclosure (int. diam. 85m N-S; 110m E-W) with straight side at N (L 80m), which had a later triangular-shaped field boundary added onto the N side of the enclosure which was enclosed by a low well-preserved earth and stone bank (top Wth 2m; base Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.5m). These later field boudaries may be associated with a house which was added onto the N side of the enclosure. Impressive large circular enclosure which is very well preserved.   Description

  On low rise of ground on wet poorly drained land with good views in all directions, nearby ringfort (TS052-041----) visible 390m to NE and large enclosure (TS052-047----) 450m to SW. No surface remains visible. Depicted as a semi-circular enclosure (approx. diam. 10m N-S; 20m E-W) on the first (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map which only the S half of the enclosure surviving and intersected by a field boundary at N running on an E-W direction. On the 1903 ed. OS 6-inch map only the W quadrant is depicted.
