  Description

  Church with nave (int. dims. c. 20m E-W; c. 8m N-S) and large south transept (dims. c. 9m E-W; c. 9m N-S) situated within a former embanked enclosure. Hachured arc marked on current OS indicates an enclos­ure running from SSW-W-NNE which is no longer visible at ground level. Graveyard extends beyond line of enclosure. According to Davies' (1948, 97-8) read­ing of papal registers, there may have been a church on this site as early as 1433. A heraldic plaque on S gable of transept indicates that present structure was built by Lord Southwell in 1688. Davies described nave as having a W door, two N windows and an E window now blocked. All windows in church are round-headed with two rounded lights surmounted by a circular ope. He also noted 'the fine Jacobean door in S transept leading down to a font with elaborate Jacobean canopy and hence into the nave, or upwards to a gallery beneath the brick vaulting of the transept'. The E portion of transept was walled off and probably used as a vestry. Ornamental terminals on gable-coping. This structure has been identified as being of National importance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995).   Situated c. 30m from the NE shore of Bawn Lake. There is local knowledge of a submerged mound of stones and wood that becomes visible when the water level in the lake is exceptionally low. Architectural heritage

• Church/chapel, 1685–1690 · National interest
  Description

  Freestanding T-plan two-bay Jacobean-style church, built 1688, with gable-fronted transept facing south and east-west orientated nave behind. Roof now gone except for two brick vaults over transept. Barge stones to transept gable with ornamental scrolls at eaves and urn finial to apex. Rubble stone walls with remnants of render, squared stone quoins. Flying buttresses to transept composed of square rubble stone pier and pyramidal brick capping. Round-arched cut stone window traceries with hood mouldings, comprising of round-headed twin lights with mullion and transom surmounted by roundel. Pointed arch Gothic window to east gable with Y-tracery, now blocked. Cut stone door opening in transept gable with rounded corners having recessed spandrels and scrolled keystone and tracery overlight matching windows. Sheeted timber door with rim lock. Sculptural family crest of Lord Southwell set in framed niche to centre of transept gable. Internal floor with sandstone flags, cut sandstone steps at entrance with carved tread nosings, leading down to nave and vestry and up to former gallery, elaborate Jacobean font canopy east of stairs. Vestry to east side of transept and two family mausoleums to nave. Detached Martin family mausoleum to east having pitched stone roof and gable-fronted elevation, rock-faced ashlar stone walls with trefoil-headed door opening and family crest over. Hamilton family mausoleum filling west end at lower level and having stepped parapet, ashlar walls and door opening with plaque over and steps to nave. Church originally sited in semi-circular enclosure and surrounded by graveyard with upright and recumbent grave markers and grave slabs dating from early eighteenth century to mid-twentieth century. Family mausoleum to north-east. Rubble-stone walls with contemporary Jacobean entrance gate piers.

  Description

  Pair of square-plan sandstone gate piers, built 1688, forming entrance to the churchyard. Ashlar sandstone piers surmounted by finial urns carved with drapery swag detail on pedestal with torus moulding over profiled stone cornice. Plain frieze with incised date to frieze with '16' on west and '88' on east pier, profiled astragal band below. Recessed coats of arms in carved relief below date band on each pier with tree motif to left and flower motifs to right, both now heavily weathered. Aslar base to piers with benchmark to base of east pier. Replacement plain wrought-iron gates with diagonal bracing bars, dog bars, and scrollwork over top rail. Rubble stone boundary and retaining walls to either side with surviving remnants of render.

  Description

  End-of-terrace three-bay two-storey former house, built c.1860, with former carriage arch forming wing to east, and single-storey extension to rear. Now in use as bank. Pitched replacement slate roof with rendered chimneystacks to gables and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with raised smooth rendered quoins. Smooth render to lintels above window openings with hood mouldings over and stone sills. Tripartite windows to outer bays with replacement uPVC windows to ground floor and replacement timber sash windows to first floor. Central entrance with replacement timber panelled door in stone surround comprising engaged columns having fluted capitals with paterae supporting cornice and semi-circular fanlight with decorative petal glazing in moulded archivolt. Door fronting onto footpath with recent steps and ramp to main entrance. Ashlar wall to east having elliptical-headed carriage arch of stone voussoirs, now infilled by rendered masonry and incorporating automatic teller machine.

  Description

  Attached six-bay two-storey house, built c.1750, with integral carriage arch in south bay, and shopfront and display window inserted to ground floor. Pitched replacement slate roof with rendered chimneystack and replacement rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls. Window openings to first floor with stone sills and six-over-six timber sash windows with exposed sash boxes. Segmental-headed window opening, now blocked, above carriage archway. Door opening between shopfronts with half-glazed timber panelled door and fixed overlight. Timber shopfront to north having double-light display window, half-glazed double leaf doors with fanlight over, and plain fascia over with raised lettering. Large triple-light display window to south with timber cornice over. Segmental-headed integral carriage arch with wrought-iron gate. Replacement windows to rear elevation. Outbuildings to rear with slate roofs and lime-washed random-rubble walls and remains of timber windows.

  Description

  Detached seven-bay single-storey former railway station, built 1866, with advanced gabled end bays, single-bay gable-fronted outbuilding attached to south end, and recent extension to north. Now in use as offices. Pitched replacement slate roof, rebuilt red brick chimneystacks, and replacement rainwater goods. Bargestones and kneelers to front gables walls, oversailing roof to rear gables with exposed purlins, but decorative bargeboards removed. Random rock-faced rubble stone walls with red brick quoins, red brick block-and-start surrounds to door and window openings with cut stone lintels and sills. Door openings to west elevation and south door to east elevation altered to form windows with concrete-block infill. Replacement timber casement windows and replacement timber panelled doors.

• Killashandra Masonic Hall, church/chapel, 1885–1890 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding gable-fronted former Methodist church, built 1886, with two-bay nave, single-bay vestry to south-west and recent flat-roofed extension to north-east. Sold, 1967, to accommodate use as hall. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, roof oversailing at eaves and gables and supported on carved rafter ends, decorative bargeboard to gable front. Roughcast rendered walls over raised smooth rendered plinth, smooth rendered surrounds to round-headed windows, triple stepped round-headed lancets to front gable having continuous cut stone sill with oculus to gable apex, paired lights to sides of nave. Square-headed door and window opening to vestry. Replacement uPVC windows and replacement timber panelled door. Setback from the road with simple cast-iron railings and gates, rubble stone plinth wall with cut stone coping where street falls away to the southwest, roughcast rendered walls, and square-plan pier to north-east end.

  Description

  Detached T-plan four-bay single-storey school, built 1876, with lower advanced gabled central bay having entrances to sides under cat-slide roofs rising to main eaves level. Now disused. Pitched slate roof on continuous underlayer of sarking boards, clay ridge tiles, and timber rafter-ends to eaves. Chimneystack to rear now overgrown, sections of cast-iron rainwater goods remaining. Snecked sandstone walls, red-brick block-and-start surrounds to openings with brick flat-arches over and chamfered sandstone sills to windows. Carved stone plaque on central gable reading "KILLASHANDRA/NATIONAL SCHOOL/1876". Coursed rubble stone walls to rear elevation with no openings. Windows boarded-up, with one multiple paned timber window to south elevation. Low entrance doors to both sides of advanced central bay with timber sheeted doors. Set behind coursed rubble stone boundary walls with forged-metal pedestrian gate in square-profile piers set on axis with entrance gable. Similar pedestrian entrance to north end of boundary wall. Rear boundary wall to Castle Hamilton demesne overgrown and inaccessible.

  Freestanding rectangular-plan mausoleum, built c.1740. Pitched stone roof with projecting barge stones and kneelers to gables. Coursed rubble sandstone walls with ashlar block-and-start quoins. Round-headed entrance door to west, having stepped profiled stone surround and keystone, opening now blocked. Blank elliptical plaque above. Mausoleum set within graveyard of late seventeenth-century church, now in ruins.

• Saint Brigid's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1860–1865 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding cruciform-plan Gothic–Revival Roman Catholic church, built 1862-3, oriented east-west with main west entrance elevation to rear and chancel elevation to front having recent lean-to entrance porch east of south transept and unfinished square-profile tower to north of chancel. Single-bay transepts, side aisles with gabled bays, sacristy to south-west. Interior renovated and reordered c.1975. Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles and ashlar limestone barge stones with corbelled kneelers and gablets, hipped slate roof to narthex projections. Copper domed roof to tower surmounted by metal cross. Sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Squared and coursed rubble sandstone and limestone walls with ashlar dressings including buttresses, corner stones, string courses and chamfered plinth. Pointed arch window openings with relieving arches having voussoirs of alternating coloured stone, chamfered stone reveals and sills, and plate traceries pierced by paired trefoil-headed lights with multifoil roundels between. Large pointed arch chancel window with elaborate moulded tracery in Decorated style. Pointed arch clerestorey openings with colonettes and plate tracery pierced by three roundels. Three equal-sized lancet windows to main west elevation. Pointed arch door openings with carved stone surrounds having colonettes to main west entrance, trefoil-headed door to tower, shouldered-arched recent door openings. Three-stage tower with parapet on corbelled string course, paired louvred belfry openings with trefoil heads to each face of upper stage, small square-headed window to middle stage, ground level stage of random polygonal masonry up to ashlar stone frieze having Latin inscription commemorating construction of church over high stepped and chamfered plinth. Stained glass windows by Messrs. Casey of Dublin. Timber sheeted double leaf door to main entrance and sheeted timber door to tower. Full-height interior with open roof having cast-iron trusses to central and side aisles, pointed arch arcade to side aisles having marble column shafts with foliate capitals, timber gallery over entrance end of nave, replacement timber pews, carved stone baptismal font, Gothic-style white marble faced altar, lectern and reredos. Enclosed by low rubble-stone wall with cut-stone coping. Ruins of earlier stone church, built c.1790 in graveyard to south.
