  Description

  Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 35m) enclosed by a substantial inner earthen bank, a shallow fosse and a berm and outer earthen bank which have been levelled from W-N-SE. A low stone field wall has been built against the inner face of the berm at W. Fosse has been modified at E and is now utilised as a field drain. Original entrance at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). Ruled-and-lined smooth rendered walls with patent reveals to window openings with stone sills. Two-over-two timber sliding sash windows to front elevation with recent timber door and shopfront to ground floor. Smooth rendered walls with plinth course. Painted stone plaque to first floor bearing Pratt coat of arms and date 1777. Window openings with stone sills to first floor, recently enlarged window opening to ground floor, uPVC windows throughout. Central door opening with Gibbsian stone doorcase with hood profile over and uPVC door. Two-storey outbuilding to rear with pitched corrugated-iron roof and random coursed rubble stone walls.

Roof to north single-bay addition concealed behind castellated parapet. Ruled-and-lined rendered walls with channelled stucco piers to sides. • Church of the Immaculate Conception, church/chapel, 1865–1875 · National interest
  Description

  Freestanding Gothic Revival cruciform-plan four-bay double-height Roman Catholic church, built 1869-1872, with entrance gable facing south-west, four-bay nave having lower side ailes, single-bay transepts, sacristy to north, attached three-stage tower to east, third stage of tower added c.2005 and steeple added c.2010. Pitched slate roof to nave and transepts with lean-to slate roofs to side aisles, hipped roof to chancel, broach spire to tower with louvered lucarnes. Alternating courses of red and blue slates to nave and transepts with terracotta ridge tiles punctuated by serrated cresting, stone barges and skew corbels with stone and cast-iron cross finials to gable apexes. Ashlar chimneystack to sacristy with seams and scalloped detail. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Snecked rubble walls with quarry-face finish, dressed stone buttresses, ashlar platbands, and ashlar plinth course. Corbelled ashlar eaves course with wide joints separating stones. Pointed arch window openings throughout with stone tracery and hood mouldings. Large spoked rose window over rows of quatrefoils to pointed arch opening at west end of nave with hood and label stops, archivolt resting on columns with capitals. Crenellated gabled door surround to gabled entrance front with pointed arch door opening comprising engaged marble colonnettes, stone tracery with pointed arch of sandstone and limestone blocks above. Timber sheeted doors with ornate iron hinges. Entrance flanked by pairs of gabled windows with block pinnacles. Paired lancet windows with single roundel to clerestory of nave. Pointed arch bipartite tracery windows to aisle with quatrefoil to apex. Tripartite window with large stone tracery rose to apex on both transepts. Gabled porch to south-west end of aisle with pointed arch entrance comprising angled-buttresses, hood moulding, marble colonettes, and double-leaf timber sheeted doors. Pointed arch stone traceried windows to chancel having pointed twin lights with multiple-foil roundels. Gable bays flanking chancel with corresponding triple light traceries. Tower with ashlar dressed angled stepped buttresses. Decorative machicolations to head of third or belfry stage of tower with pair of louvered lancets to each side, projecting string course below. Second stage with lancet windows, statue to centre of east side standing on column corbel with projecting decorative gabled hood over. Pointed arch opening to tower entrance with hood moulding and archivolt supported on marble colonettes, plate tracery surmounting elliptical-headed door opening with double-leaf timber battened doors. Pointed arch windows to sacristry, corbelled lintel to door opening with timber sheeted door. Full-height interior open into roof and single-storey aisles, having exposed timber truss roof and infill, with trusses resting on colonettes to clerestorey. String course below clerestorey. Stone dressed pointed arch arcades to aisles on marble columns. Elaborate stained glass windows. Gallery to west end with timber balustrade resting on open masonry arcade. Decorative tiled floor. Elaborate marble reredos, altar, and ambo. Timber pews. Graveyard to west of church. Fatima shrine, built 1946, to south. Apse wall of former church, built 1812, to east. Snecked limestone boundary wall to south and east with saddle coping. Gabled ashlar piers to south entrance with cast-iron gates.

Red brick block-and-start dressings, stone sills to window openings, and timber sheeted doors to openings. Red brick surround to segmental-headed integral carriageway with recent timber sheeted door having original iron hinges. Remains of hoist to side elevation opening. Wrought-iron double-leaf gates with recent pebble-dashed walls enclosing site.

  Attached late Victorian six-bay two-storey former parish hall, built 1888, with off-centre projecting gabled two-storey porch. Pitched slate roof with crested terracotta ridge tiles, limestone coping, stepped red brick chimneystacks to gable ends with saw-tooth collars and clay pots, terracotta finial to apex of porch, carved limestone kneelers to gable end walls and to entrance porch, replacement rainwater goods. Rubble stone walls with limestone quoins and deep moulded red brick cornice, red brick block-and-start quoins to porch. Plaque to front elevation wall reads ‘St. Mary’s Hall AD1888 J Flood P.P’. Segmental-headed window openings with red brick reveals and stone sills. Windows comprising original two-pane top timber sash and replacement lower casement sections. Round-headed door opening in ground floor of porch with red brick reveals and arch, plain glazed fanlights over replacement timber doors, having limestone thresholds and jamb-stones. Recent concrete steps to either side of porch with rendered side walls providing access to recent first floor doorways.

  Terraced Victorian six-bay two-storey hotel, built c.1880, with advanced gabled end bays. Recent four-bay three-storey extension to east. Pitched slate roof with terracotta crested ridge tiles, cast-iron and replacement rainwater goods. Rendered chimneystack to centre and to west, bull-nosed brick course to barges ending with brick kneeler above quoins. Roughcast rendered walls with brick to half height of ground floor of centre elevation and east gable. Brick block-and-start quoins to gables and jambs of window openings with brick flat arches over. Brick platband at upper window head level of western gable and as sill course of upper window on eastern gable, east gable also in brick. Paired windows to third and ground floor of east gable. All window openings with stone sills and uPVC windows. Segmental-headed openings to ground floor of front elevation and western gable with fixed recent tripartite glazing. Recent rendered masonry porch with pitched roof and recent glazed timber door to entrance, flanked by pair of windows with stone sills, uPVC windows and remains of hood mouldings above.

Pitched replacement slate roof with ashlar chimneystack to centre and to south party wall, rendered chimneystack with stone coping stone to north party wall, cast-iron rainwater goods. Ruled-and-lined rendered walls with stone eaves corbel course and channelled stucco piers. Replacement six-over-six timber sash windows to ground and first floor. Central doorcase comprising round-headed opening with limestone block-and-start surround, cornice, and arch with keystone, having timber petal fanlight and replacement timber panelled door, with sandstone threshold and concrete step. Shopfront to north end having fluted timber pilasters with replacement timber fascia over, surrounding display window on low plinth with stone sill and metal guard rail, and recessed glazed double timber doors with fixed overlight.

Elliptical-headed window openings to ground floor with stucco surrounds, keystones, and stone sills. Replacement timber casements, with Wedgwood-style stucco panels to arch heads having swag and urn motifs. Stone pediment above central doorcase supported on console brackets. One-over-one timber sash windows to ground and first floor, all with stone sills. Fixed bipartite timber windows to ground floor flanking pubfront. Pubfront comprising timber fascia board with cornice and raised lettering, supported by pilasters. Pub door with ashlar surround to double-leaf replacement timber doors. Carriage opening with three-centre arch and timber sheeted doors.

  Description

  Freestanding former east end stone wall and lateral two-stage turrets of Roman Catholic church, built 1812, now in use as entrance gate to replacement church. Stepped apex to centre wall with belfry and barge stones atop pointed opening, flanked by pair of square-plan turrets. Limestone ashlar belfry with cross, limestone barge stones and stringcourse to parapet of centre. Rubble sandstone walls with recent strap pointing, limestone voussoirs and plinth stone to central opening. Crenellated parapets to turrets with pinnacles and cornice. Machiccolation to southern inner face of turrets. Blind diamond-shaped opening with limestone surround to three sides of second stage to turrets. Gabled motif to three sides of turrets marking apex of first stage with blind pointed arch opening below having limestone sills. Cut corner stones from first stage level to parapet. Structure abutted by two tapered segments of walling to south and having cast-iron double gates.

  Attached six-bay two-storey house, built c.1780, with integral carriage arch to ground floor. Now in use as commercial premises. Pitched replacement slate roof with smooth rendered chimneystacks to north party wall and two to centre, cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls. Window openings with stone sills and replacement uPVC windows. Round-headed door opening with stone doorcase having keystone, fanlight with switch-track tracery, and replacement panelled timber door. Elliptical-headed integral carriage arch with recent timber sheeted doors. Entrance approached by sandstone steps. Random rubble stone walls with square-profile piers to boundary with street.
