- TS081-014 Enclosure
Description
On very gradual NE-facing slope in gently undulating pastureland. An enclosure (TS081-015----) is visible c. 164m to the NE. A circular area (diam. 28.7m N-S; 32m E-W) defined by an earthen and stone bank (Wth 1.4m crest, 3.2m base; int. H 0.68m; ext. H 1.07m). Large mature trees (Irish elm or Sweet chestnut) growing around the bank with some stumps in the interior. Gap in bank in W quadrant (Wth 2.4m), appears to be the result of erosion. The bank is best preserved in the S quadrant. The landowner described the enclosure as 'a grove'. No visible external fosse. This enclosure may be a tree-ring or a ringfort modified for ornamental planting. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 07 January 2014
- TS081-015 Ringfort - rath
Description
On the SE-facing slope of low ridge in gentle undulating pastureland. Possible enclosure (TS81-014----) visible c. 160m to the SW. Roughly circular area (diam. 37.5m NW-SE; other diams not possible due to clumps of brambles) enclosed by a bank (Wth 1.6m crest, 5.5m base; int. H 0.78m; ext. H 1m); fosse (Wth 2.2m; D 1.2m) and outer bank (Wth 0.8m crest, 2.6m base; ext. H 0.72m). Some large beech trees growing around the bank and at least one ash. Interior slopes to the SE. No grass cover in the interior which is used by cattle for shelter. Outer bank possibly incorporated in field boundary to NW. Gap in inner bank downslope in SE quadrant (Wth c. 2m), while there is a corresponding dip in height of the outer bank this seems to be the result of cattle erosion. On the 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map the outer bank is shown as a field boundary, however it keeps a constant concentricity with the inner bank and is also fairly denuded, implying contemporaneity. Both banks are more substantial upslope to the NW. Downslope the inner bank is largely reduced to scarp. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 07 January 2014
- TS081-016 Ringfort - rath
Description
On the flat crest of a low ridge in gently undulating pastureland. Roughly circular area (diam. 42.5m NW-SE; no other diam. possible) enclosed by a low earthen and stone bank (Wth 1.2m crest, 2.25m base; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.68m). Just over half the ringfort in the SW sector is densely overgrown with scrub, the remainder of the monument is under grass with a large oak tree on the bank in the N quadrant. Part of the bank and the interior has been degraded by cattle. The interior slopes to the SW. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS081-017 Ringfort - rath
Description
On relatively flat ground in gently undulating terrain, under pasture. Ringfort conjoined with another ringfort (TS081-017002-). A roughly oval or triangular-shaped area (diam. 34.6m N-S; c. 45m E-W somewhat impeded by vegetation), enclosed by a earthen bank (Wth 1.3m crest, 3.5m base; int. H 0.62m; ext. H 0.8m). The E bank runs NE-SW forming a straight side. There is a gap in the bank at the angle in the SE quadrant, an area which is very overgrown with vegetation. There is an entrance (Wth 4.7m) in the NE sector where the bank on the E side continues in a northeasterly direction beyond the monument to form the NW quadrant of the conjoined ringfort. The interior is filled with dead nettles and some scrub, also scrub around the bank. A field bank follows the line of the ringfort in the N and E quadrants. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS081-017001 Ringfort - rath
Description
On relatively flat ground in gently undulating terrain, under pasture. Conjoined with ringfort (TS081-017001-). A roughly circular ringfort (diam. c. 40m N-S and E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.1m crest, 4.6m base; int. H 1.23m; ext. H 1.86m) planted with mature elm trees, the interior is heavily overgrown with vegetation. There is a well-defined entrance in the NE quadrant (Wth 2.5m). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS081-033001 Ringfort - rath
Description
On the N-facing slope of a gentle hill in undulating pastureland. Ringfort (TS081-033002-) lies 50m to the NW. Monument very overgrown, has been fenced off. Roughly circular area (based on depiction on 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map) with a diam. c. 35m (OPW Correspondence 1969), enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.4-2m crest, 4.4m base; int. H 0.95-1.9m; ext. H 1.1m). In the SE quadrant the bank is very high and quite disturbed, appears to be the result of fairly recent dumping. Number of tree stumps around the bank. No visible evidence of an external fosse. Bank somewhat disturbed in the NW quadrant but still intact. The field boundaries to NW and W of the ringfort depicted on the 2nd ed. OS 6-inch map have been removed, the material probably dumped on the bank in the SE quadrant. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 07 January 2014
- TS081-033002 Ringfort - rath
Description
Just off the crest of a gentle hill on the N slope, in reclaimed pastureland. Ringfort (TS081-033001-) is situated 50m to the SE. The location of the ringfort is depicted as a large circular area (diam. c. 48m N-S; c. 55m E-W) of woodland on the 1st (1840) and as an earthen monument on the 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map. Monument inspected in 1969 and is described as being a denuded ringfort, possibly a tree-ring, the ground being 'trampled and disturbed' and the bank 'where visible is low, only c. 4' [1.2m] high' (OPW Correspondence Files 1969). It was included in Land Project works (ibid.). No visible trace of the ringfort above ground, a kink in the field boundary to the NE of the monument is the only remaining indication that a ringfort was present. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 07 January 2014
- TS081-069 Enclosure
Description
On a SW-facing slope in undulating terrain, under tillage. Another cropmark enclosure (TS081-070----) was identified c. 70m to the E. Enclosure identified as a roughly circular cropmark on aerial photograph (ASIAP (30) 15-17, 3.8.97), probably indicative of a fosse, with an outer fosse concentric to the inner circle from N-E-S, this fosse then seems to extend westward. It is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 15 January 2014
- TS081-070 Enclosure
Description
On the summit of a ridge in rolling, undulating terrain, under tillage. Another cropmark enclosure (TS081-069----) was identified c. 70m to the W. The enclosure was indentied on aerial photograph (ASIAP (30) 11-14, 3.8.97). It appears as a roughly circular corpmark, a field boundary obscures the SE quadrant. It is not visible at ground level.
