• TS077-085 Church
  Description

  At the base of a N-facing slope in a small valley which runs E-W, within a graveyard (TS077-085001-), near the southern boundary. References to this church appear as early as 1210 and 1260 as 'Kilcronete' and 'Kilcronactan' respectively in the Pontificia Hibernica (Ó Cearbhaill 2007, 107). Futher references to 'Kilcrone' and 'Killcronyth' appear in the Papal Tax records and the diocesan records of Lismore in 1306 and 1499 respectively (ibid.) and from 1539-40 to 1615 it appears as various forms of Kilgrant in the Inquisitions of Tipperary, the Calendar of Fiants, the Irish patent rolls and the Royal Visitation records (ibid. 107-8). The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to the 'Church of Killgrant' with one and a half acres of the three acres of glebeland being situated E of the church and fenced with a ditch (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 285). The nave (int. dims. c. 5.2m N-S; c. 8m E-W; wall T 0.7m; W wall int. H 0.58m; ext. H 0.55m) and chancel (int. dims. 4.8m E-W) church, aligned E-W, is defined by low walls overgrown with grass. Only a short length of upstanding wall survives, at the E end of the S wall of the nave, very badly overgrown with ivy. The church is divided by a cross-wall (T 0.7m). There is a possible entrance (Wth 1.3m) in the N wall of the nave. The OS Letters refer to a 'semicircular doorway constructed of chiselled red sandstone' (Wth 1.2m; H 1.9m) in part of the S wall, only 4.5m length of which then survived upstanding (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 147).   Description

  At base of a N-facing slope in a small valley which runs E-W. Large, irrgularly shaped graveyard (dima. 66m N-S; 76m E-W) with church (TS077-085----) located near the southern boundary. Graveyard at junction of three roads. The surrounding fields are a mixture of pasture and tillage. The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to the 'Church of Killgrant' with one and a half acres of the three acres of glebeland being situated E of the church and fenced with a ditch (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 285). The graveyard is occupied by mostly 18th, 19th and 20th-century headsones. The earliest visible dates to 1732 and is immediately S of the E end of the church. • TS077-086 Castle - tower house
  Description

  On top of a ridge, on level ground, in pastureland which slopes gently to N of the monument. In the mid-17th century John White and his mother Lady Ellis Morres owned the land of Mylerstowne, upon which stood 'a castle the walls onely standing' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 286-7). This castle is also indicated on the 17th-century Down Survey maps. William fitz James Brennaghe of Milodeston is fined for failing to attend as juror in 1561 (COD V, 121). Only the S wall (ext. L 9.5m) and a portion of the S end of the W wall (ext. L 5.8m; wall T 1.9m) survive. It is composed of limestone rubble, roughly coursed, with no base-batter. There has been some repair to the base of the S wall at the W end, with evidence of a single-storey shed built up against the external wall at ground level. The quoin stones are robbed out at the SW and SE angles. The wall survives to second-floor level, the upper storeys covered in ivy. There is a garderobe chute at the S end of the W wall, but only the lower courses of the back and one side stone on the N side of the ope survive. Concrete slabs, stones and other building debris from a dismantled shed have been dumped against the inner face, up to the base of first-floor level, and stones have been quarried from the inner face of the S wall at ground-floor level. The first floor was carried on wooden beams. Centrally placed in the S wall at first-floor level there is a large window embrasure, splaying internally. The window itself is broken out and the inner embrasure appears to drop to floor level. Towards the S end of the W wall, the S side of a window embrasure survives, splaying internally, with the light broken out. The N end of this wall does not survive. The second floor is carried on a stone vault which sprang from the N and S walls. This has completely collapsed, with only the springer surviving. There are vertical slots at the E end of the S wall under the vault where the timber frame supports were fixed during construction of the vault. The second floor only survives to a height of 1-1.5m above the vault. There is ivy growing at this floor level, obscuring any features. There has been some burning up against the E end of the S internal wall.
