- GA128-012 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a slight rise in low-lying grassland. Very poorly preserved subcircular cashel (48m NE-SW; 42m NW-SE) defined by a traces of its foundation line from ESE to S to NNW. It is overlain by a later drystone wall. No trace survives from NNW to E; there is a silage pit in the N sector. The later wall is much-collapsed between NE and E. From W to NNW traces of the original wall (Wth c. 2.2m; ext. H 0.4m) are most clearly visible but it is overgrown with briars. Two sheds have been erected within the interior. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 13 October 2016
- GA128-013 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a gentle NE-facing slope in grassland. Marked on the OS 1:2500 plan (surveyed 1912-16) as a possible pit. However, according to local information, a 'fort' was known at this location. On inspection in July 1982 a very low grass-covered semicircular bank of earth and stone (Wth 1.6m; base Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.15m) was visible from NE to SW (int. dim. 12m NE -SW). The outer ground level was higher than the interior and a number of grass-covered boulders were visible in the interior. The 'fort' was not known to ever have been any higher and it had not been bulldozed - stones were thrown into it. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 8 February 2019
- GA128-014 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On an E-facing slope in grassland. Poorly preserved roughly circular cashel (diam. 23m) defined by a drystone wall overlain by a field wall at N and SW. Though much collapsed, double wall-facing is evident intermittently. A gap at ESE may be original. A possible souterrain (GA128-014001-) is associated. (Fahey 1893, 5) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 13 October 2016
- GA128-014001 Souterrain
Description
Within the interior of a cashel (GA128-014----). According to Fahey (1893, 5) based on ‘local traditions, as well as structural indications’, it is likely that there is a ‘cave’ (possible souterrain) in the 'fort'. No visible surface trace of it survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 13 October 2016
