Recorded monuments
- TS082-018001 Ringfort - rath
Description
On the edge of the crest of a ridge. The SE quadrant is in pasture and the bank in the W quadrant is incorporated in a field boundary. A field boundary running NE-SW transects the ringfort, the remainder of the monument is levelled, in a barley field. The monument is marked as a large, roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 67m N-S; c. 57m E-W) on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. The bank, (Wth 2m crest, 4.4m base; int. H 0.32m; ext. H 0.8m) is best preserved in the SE quadrant. There is no visible evidence of an external fosse. Neighbouring ringforts (TS082-018002-;TS082-018003-) lie 9.3m to the SE and c. 85m to the SSE respectively. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 21 January 2014
- TS082-018002 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a S-facing slope, just off the crest of a ridge, in undulating pasture. Nicholastown Castle (TS082-043001-) is visible on a hill 1.5km to the SW. Neighbouring ringfort (TS082-018001-) lies 9.3m to the NW and ringfort (TS082-018003-) lies 34m to the S. Roughly circular area (diam. c. 36m N-S; c. 40m E-W), very dense scrub in interior with whitethorn around the bank. Bank (Wth 1.4-1.7m crest; 3.2m base; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.3m) of earth and stone. Gap (Wth 0.93m) in N quadrant appears to be broken through by cattle and another gap in the NW quadrant (Wth 1.3m) also appears to have been broken through. In the SW quadrant there has been some small scale quarrying, now covered by vegetation. The bank on the S side of the ringfort is heavily overgrown with brambles. A gap (Wth 1.5m) in the NE quadrant may be the original entrance. In the SE quadrant the bank has been levelled. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 21 January 2014
- TS082-018003 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a S-facing slope of hill, just off the crest, in rolling pasture. This is the most southerly of three ringforts in close proximity, the adjacent site (TS082-018002-) is located c. 44m to N and TS-82-018001- lies c. 85m to the NNW. A roughly circular area (diam. 32m E-W, N-S c. 33m from 6-inch map, not obtainable on ground due to dense scrub), enclosed by an earthen and stone bank (Wth 1.1m crest, 2.1m base; int. H 0.33m; ext. H 0.8m). The bank is covered with white thorn and there is a lot of scrub and nettles in the interior. The bank is particularly pronounced in the W sector (Wth 2.4m crest, 7m base; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 2m). There are gaps in the bank in the W (Wth 1.3m), NE (Wth 1m) and E (1.7m) quadrants, all appear to be caused by cattle. There is a possible entrance in the NNW (Wth 1.2m) sector which faces the adjacent ringfort (TS082-018002-). There is no external fosse visible in SE-N-W sectors, however there is a wide, deep fosse (Wth 2.7m; D 0.7m) running from W-S-SE with a slight suggestion of a counterscarp bank, very broad and flat, difficult to gauge due to scrub.
