- GA113-108 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a slight rise in an area of reclaimed pastureland and outcropping limestone. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m). No visible surface trace survived in the early 1950s when McCaffrey (1952, 270, no. 25a) surveyed the area. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 27 May 2018
- GA113-109 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a gentle rise in pastureland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 270-71, no. 25b) as a 'Stone fort (?)' consisting of a 'semi-circular wall, field-fences and two structures' enclosed by a cashel wall which was subcircular in plan (c. 37m by c. 32m). There was an 'entrance [Wth c. 4.6m] on northeast side', though on his plan this is marked at NW. The 'two structures' (c. 12m by 5m and c. 8m by 5m), rectangular in plan, are shown in S half of the interior, separated by a curving wall. They may be the remains of house sites. A possible annexe is indicated on the plan at NW. Due to field clearance, no visible surface trace of the cashel or its associated features survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 4 August 2017
- GA113-216 Enclosure
Description
In grassland sloping to the S. This possible enclosure (c. 90m ENE-WSW) is visible on Google Earth imagery which was taken in 2011 (Google 2018). It is cut from ENE to WSW by the road from Ardrahan to Kinvarra. To the N of the road it is indicated from roughly W through N to ENE by a band of darker vegetation growth in the field. It is not obvious in the field to the S of the road. The band of vegetation may indicate the line of a fosse. It is not visible at ground level. The image was brought to our attention by Mr. Z. Silke. A possible cashel (GA113-108----) lay c. 110m to the SE. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 24 May 2019
