• TS061-074 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on an elevated area (spot height of 467ft) with good views in all directions. Oval area (dims. 33m WNW-ESE; 31m NNE-SSW) defined by flat-topped bank (overall Wth 6.55m-8.45m; Wth at top 1.75-2.2m; int. H 0.5-0.65m; ext. H 1.7-1.95m) of earth and stone. Interior of bank well formed and stone-faced around SW-arc. Entrance (Wth 5.25m) at ESE. Various cattle breaches: (Wth 1.2m) at WSW; breach (Wth 1.5m) at N; breach (Wth 2.75m) at NNE. Intervening fosse (overall Wth 8.35-10.7m; basal Wth 5-5.3m; D 1.15-1.65m) is wide and flat-bottomed. Outer bank (overall Wth 10.05; Wth at top 3m; int. H 1.65m; ext. H 2.85m) is best preserved E-NNE and is lower and eroded (overall Wth 4.85m; Wth at top 1.5m; int. H 1.15m; ext. H 1.35m) NNE-E. Outer bank is exceptionally wide around SW-arc and may have functioned as a small bailey. Entrance (Wth 4m) at ESE corresponds to main gap in inner bank. Various cattle breaches: at W (Wth 2m), NNW (Wth 2m), N (Wth 1.5m), NNE (Wth 3m). Possible remains of outer fosse (overall Wth 7.5m; basal Wth 1.2m; D 0.2m) around SW-arc. Causeway at ESE between inner and outer entrance gap. Reused as rear ramp to load lime kiln, remnants of which abut outer bank at ESE. Large quarried depression to ESE shown on map and other quarrying further to ESE covering a larger area.   Description

  In tillage (fallow), with a slight tilt downslope to E. D-shaped area (dims. 28m N-S; 27m E-W straight side at N) defined by faint trace of levelled scarp (Wth 6.5m; max H 0.35m). Possible traces of a fosse and outer bank along the straight N side and around the S arc. Field boundary to W truncates fosse area SW-NW. Interior is generally level.   Description

  In enclosed area, abutting farmyard to W and enclosed by woodland to N and pasture to E and S. Roughly circular area (diam. c. 35m) defined by substantial earthen bank (overall Wth 6m; Wth at top 2m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 2.25m) which is very well preserved. Fosse (overall Wth 9.5m; basal Wth 3m; D 0.35m) seen S-SW is truncated by farmyard across W-sector. Fosse may survive NW-NNE and SE-S, but not seen due to dense vegetation.   Description

  In improved pasture, on a gentle S-facing slope. Circular area (dims. 22m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by remains of earthen bank (overall Wth 5.15m; Wth at top 0.75m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.1m) SE-SSE, S-WSW and a scarp (Wth 1.9m; H 0.7m) WSW-NE. Enclosing elements modified and straightened around E-arc, where incorporated into field boundary (long-axis N-S). Possible entrance (Wth 3.3m) at NW and gap (Wth 2.5m) at S. Fosse (basal Wth 1.2m; overall Wth 4.9m; Dth 0.15m) backfilled, but still traceable and best preserved around NE and SE arcs on return toward field boundary. Interior slopes gently downslope to SE.   In improved pasture, on a W-facing slope. Circular area (dims. 28m E-W; 26m N-S) defined by inner bank (overall Wth 4.05m; Wth at top 1.5m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 1.55m) and outer fosse (overall Wth 7.75m; basal Wth 2.5m; D 0.3m) E-NNW. Outer bank (overall Wth 5.25m; Wth at top 1.55m; int. H 0.95m; ext. H 0.65m) ESE-WNW is poorly preserved WNW-N. Causewayed entrance (Wth 4m) at SSW. Outer bank is truncated by field boundary across N and E sectors. Interior has a W-facing slope.   Description

  In improved pasture, on a gentle S-facing slope. Remains of rectangular area (dims. 33m E-W; 22m N-S) defined by broad, flat-topped bank (overall Wth 7.15m; Wth at top 1.8m; int. H 0.95m; ext. H 1.7m) at N side and scarp (Wth c 3m; c. H 0.5m) along W-side. Monument has been levelled to E and S where there is a scarp levelled out over a larger area. Probable fosse (overall Wth 5.75m; basal Wth 0.9m; D 1.5m) to W and N defined on exterior by field boundary: Fosse does not continue to E or S beyond monument on these sides. Remains of fosse (basal Wth 1.5m; overall Wth 5.8m; D 0.1m) along S-side. Interior is level, uneven on surface and covered in nettles for the most part.   Description

  In improved, level pasture. Oval area (dims. 25m E-W; 21m N-S) defined by poorly preserved scarp (Wth 2.3m; H 0.7m) NNW-SE and remains of levelled scarp (Wth 1.5m; H 0.15m) SE-SW. Scarp (Wth 2.2m H 0.45m) fenced off and not easily accessible SW-NNW and is cut by pond SW-W as per latest edition OS 6-inch map. No entrance identified. Possible remains of fosse (basal Wth 2.85m; overall Wth 7.95m; D 0.2m) NNW-SE are deeply poached by cattle.   Description

  In improved pasture, on the upper edge of an E-facing contour. Levelled remains of oval area (dims. 32m E-W; 28m N-S) defined by levelled scarp (Wth 3.7m; H 0.35m) S-NW and reduced to a very short, levelled scarp (Wth 1.5m; H 0.35m) NW-S. Interior is higher to W-side and falls gently to E, with prevalent slope. Faint scar of curvilinear field boundary respects E-side of monument. Trackway may truncate base of scarp to W and trackway c. 2m to S. The enclosure is depicted on the 1st (1840) and 2nd (1952-54) ed. OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular area (diam. c. 30m) and was drawn as such in a sketch plan and sections in 1954 (OS Field Memorandums). In 1982 Cahill (unpublished thesis) described the monument as being in poor condition with one bank and a waterlogged ditch. Ringfort (TS061-091----) is c. 100m to SE.   In improved pasture, at base of an E-facing slope. Remains of circular area (dims. 34m E-W; 32m N-S) defined by levelled bank which is best traced around northern and southern arcs. The enclosure is depicted on the 1st (1840) and 2nd (1952-54) ed. OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular area (diam. c. 35m) defined by a bank and was drawn as such in a sketch plan and sections in 1954 (OS Field Memorandums). In 1982 Cahill (unpublished thesis) described the monument as being in fair condition with one bank and one ditch. Ringfort (TS061-090----) is c. 100m to NW. • House, 1840–1880 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1860. Hipped slate roof with terracotta ridge cresting, rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with smooth rendered plinth and rendered quoins. Square-headed two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows with decorative rendered surround and painted sills. Square-headed doorways to front and east elevations, with decorative rendered surrounds and having replacement timber panelled doors, with sidelights to front doorway. Yard of outbuildings to south, all single-storey except for north-east building, all with pitched slate roofs, roughcast rendered walls. Double-leaf wrought-iron gates to road, to rendered walls with rendered inner and outer piers. Decorative wrought-iron gate between yard and front garden. Square-headed door and window openings, some with timber sash windows, and round-headed doorways to western building. Lawned garden to front of house, with wrought-iron garden gate in rendered boundary wall with piers.
