- GA056-084 Enclosure
Description
In level grassland. Marked on OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (D c. 60m) cut by a field wall at NW and SE. No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA056-085001 Church
Description
On a rise in undulating grassland. This is the site of an early cell, dedicated to St Cuanna, which later belonged to the Fratres Cruciferi of Castledermot (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 389). What survives is a poorly preserved medieval parish church (NE-SW; L 19.5m, Wth 7.3 ext.). Only N end of NW side-wall, along with part of SW gable and adjoining section of SE side-wall stand to anything like full height. A later wall has been built on the line of NE gable and the remains of the side-walls. The original doorway, neatly blocked, is at S end of SE side-wall. The only other surviving architectural features are a singly-light flat-headed window at N end of NW wall and a wall-cupboard in SE wall. There are numerous cut-stone fragments in the surrounding graveyard, including a possible triangular window head and some pieces of late medieval window/door arches. A round tower (GA056-085003-) stands 5m to SE. (Hardiman 1846, 370) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). - GA056-085003 Round tower
Description
Immediately SE of a church (GA056-085001-). What survives is the stump of a circular tower (D c. 3.25m, H 2.5m) composed of large well-dressed and coursed limestone blocks. Seven courses of masonry still stand on N side, above a basal plinth, but S side is reduced to the foundations revealing a rubble core. According to Barrow (1979, 98-9), this is probably the tower referred to in the Annals as being erected at 'Annadown' in 1238 (see GA056-069001-). (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 389; Killanin and Duignan 1967, 304-5) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 The following image is attached: GA056-085003-.jpg
- GA056-086 Cairn - unclassified
Description
On a rise in otherwise low-lying grassland. Marked on 1st and 3rd (1920) eds. of OS 6-inch maps as an irregularly shaped cairn (NW-SE c. 20m, NE-SW c. 10m). Due to extensive field clearance in the area, all that survives is a slight circular rise (D c. 23m) defined by a degraded scarp. A similar monument (GA056-087----) lies c. 240m to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA056-087 Cairn - unclassified
Description
Some 240m SE of a similar monument (GA056-086----). A low oval mound (NE-SW 25.2m, NW-SE 13.3m) composed of small stones but much overgrown. It is delimited by a modern field wall at NW and elsewhere by trees and bushes. In SE sector, traces of a possible revetment (L 2m, H 0.3m) are visible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
