- SL034-207001 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
In undulating rocky pasture, on a slight N-facing slope. A roughly circular earth and stone mound (diam. 4.5m at top; H 1.1m) surrounded by a fosse (Wth 2.8m) NW-SSE. The outer edge of the fosse is defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.35m; ext. H 1.3m) NW-N and ENE-SE and by a scarp N-ENE; it is levelled elsewhere. At S, a small portion of the mound has been dug away. Moss-covered stones are strewn across the barrow which is dry and clear of overgrowth. A barrow (SL034-207002-) lies c. 30m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). - SL034-207002 Barrow - unclassified
Description
In undulating rocky pasture, on a slight SW-facing slope c. 30m SW of a ring-barrow (SL034-207001-). A roughly circular raised area (diam. 4.6m) defined by an earth and stone bank (ext. H 0.4m) NNE-W and by a scarp elsewhere. Possible stone kerbing was noted along the external base of the bank NNE-E. The ground falls away sharply 4m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). - SL034-216001 House - 18th/19th century
Description
Not included in the SMR (1989) but listed in the RMP (1995) and classified 'Hut Site'. Not marked on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. In undulating pasture, on a slight E-facing slope. The remains of a rectangular structure (9.5m N-S; 5.6m E-W at N end; 2.5m E-W at S end), probably of nineteenth-century date, is built against the E-facing slope in a sheltered position from prevailing SW winds. The S wall has been removed and the W side comprises rock outcrop at the S and N ends which is joined by a low drystone wall (L 2.6m; H 0.4m), possibly a later insertion. Elsewhere the walls (T 0.7m; H 1m) are constructed of un-mortared quarried limestone blocks. A disused field boundary (on a N-S axis) abuts the N wall of the house at N. A second field boundary extends E-W across an area of disturbed ground on the S side of the house. This house is post-1700 AD in date. - SL034-221 Cliff-edge fort
Description
In pasture, on a shelf on a SW-facing slope overlooking Lough Arrow. A roughly D-shaped area (dims. 16m NE-SW; 17m NW-SE) defined on the straight SW side by a drystone field boundary wall, set back slightly from a steep natural slope, and by a moss-covered limestone rubble wall (int. H 0.9m; ext. H 0.5m) W-SSE. The latter curves N-E but straightens out as it approaches the drystone wall at W and S. The interior is level but lower than external ground level in the NE half and flush with it in the SW half. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). - SL034-265 Enclosure
Description
In pasture in limestone terrain, on a terrace on a high ridge overlooking the E shore of Lough Arrow. To NE ground shelves up gradually; to SW it falls steeply for c. 400m in a series of rocky terraces, eventually levelling out at the lake shore. This enclosure is not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. It is visible in aerial imagery (Digital globe, Google Earth). Circular area (diam. 21m N−S; 21 E−W) defined by a low remnants of a bank (Wth 1.4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.3m at E). The enclosure backs onto a slight rise at W bordered by a N−S seam of limestone bedrock. This gives the interior a gentle dip or slightly concave profile. The enclosing bank is evident at NNW−SE as a low grass-covered rise, best preserved at E−SE; it is barely discernible on the W half where it converges with rising ground. The interior mirrors the natural slope, with a gentle fall from the perimeter at W toward the centre where it levels out but is only marginally higher than exterior ground level. Notified to NMS by Andrew Goodison.
