Recorded monuments
- WI008-005 Designed landscape - tree-ring
Description
Situated on a gentle NW-facing slope. Circular enclosure (diam. 18m) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth c. 3m; H 0.8m). No trace of entrance, fosse or internal features. Possibly a tree-ring. Archaeological monitoring of top soil removal in 2004 (Excavation Licence 04E1201) carried out immediately to the E of this monument did not reveal anything of archaeological significance (Cryerhall 2007, 477-8). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 11 January 2013 Revised by: Claire Breen
- WI008-005001 Rock art
Description
On a relatively gentle N facing slope, on the foothills of the northern shoulder of the Little Sugar Loaf, with views of Raven Rock and Two Rock Mountain to the NW, the Scalp defile to the NNW, Carrickgollogan to the N and Killiney Hill to the NE. At the centre of a small tree ring (WI008-005----), a large, earthfast granite boulder (L 3.2m N-S; Wth 3m E-W; H 0.4m at S; H 0.5m at W; H 0.7m at N). Some 18 weathered cup marks are scattered across the highest point of the stone. The two largest cups are 6cm and 8cm across, and 1cm and 1.5cm deep respectively. The remainder range from 3.5cm to 4.5cm across, and are generally very shallow, averaging 0.5cm deep. Compiled by: Chris Corlett and Claire Breen Date of upload: 01 February 2013
- WI008-042001 Fulacht fia
Description
On relatively steep NE facing slope, a concentration of burnt stones and charcoal stained soil (L 16m; Wth 6 - 8m) was noted here after ploughing in 2000 (SMR file). Second possible fulacht fia (WI008-042002-) noted 50m to E. Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 05 February 2013

- WI008-063 Kiln - corn-drying
Description
The remains of a corn-drying kiln and a structure were excavated here in advance of the construction work associated with a large retail development in 2004 (Excavation Licence 04E1324). The kiln consisted of ‘a cut fire chamber, with evidence of in situ burning on the base and sides of the cut. Connected to this was a cut for the flue, 2.2m in length. In the fire chamber of the kiln were set upright stones, stone sockets and postholes, all indicating the presence of a superstructure, possibly a platform to hold the grains.’ (Cryerhall 2007, 478-9). The structure was sub-rectangular in shape (L 5.2m; Wth 3.8m) and defined by a curving cut (max. D 0.4m) and post-holes. There were two entrances and the internal space was divided in two and had one small hearth and two waste pits. The excavator suggests that the structure may have functioned as a barn. (Cryerhall 2007, 478-9) Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 11 January 2013
