- TS075-045 Megalithic tomb - portal tomb
Description
On the break of a S-facing slope of Bain at the eastern end of the Galty mountains, in forestry. Deciduous scrub and ferns are reclaiming the slope after previous vegetation was burnt. Extensive view to E and S but blocked upslope to N and by trees to W. Possible portal tomb (per. comm. Paul Walsh 1991) consisting of a large sandstone conglomerate slab (dims. 2.8m x 2.94m) partially resting on a triangular-shaped side-stone (H 0.91m ext., 1.23m int.; max. L 1.07m; T 0.28m) to the SW, sloping down to the NE where it rests on the ground. Aligned NW-SE presuming that the triangular stone is a side-stone. A distinct linear depression (Wth 0.23-0.32m; D 0.02-0.08m) runs NE-SW across the centre of the capstone. There is a lot of stone rubble in the chamber. There is a rectangular block of quartz (dims. 0.22m x 0.36m) lying loose immediately NE of tomb and a scatter of rubble extends c. 3m SW of the tomb. There is also a mound of rubble (dims. c. 3.5m x 2.5m; H 1.2m) 1.5m to N. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 25 June 2015
- TS075-046 Ringfort - rath
Description
On ground sloping gently to the E in undulating terrain, just below brow of hill to W. Under pasture. Roughly circular enclosure (diam. 38.8m N-S; 43.8m E-W) defined by a broad bank (Wth 6.7m crest, 9.7m base; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.9m) sloping very gently towards the concave interior and wide, deep, flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 1m). Scratching post has been erected near the centre of the interior. There is a causeway (Wth 7m) in the W quadrant. The inner face of the bank has been slightly eroded by cattle in the S quadrant. From E-SE the fosse has been infilled. The fosse is best preserved on the W side. There is evidence of lazy beds in the interior. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS075-047 Castle - unclassified
Description
On high, level ground in deserted farmyard. Farm buildings are ruinous and largely overgrown. Surrounded by rough pasture. In the mid-17th century the land was in the ownership of 'Thomas, Lord Baron of Cahyr. Irish Papist' and upon the land stood 'the stump of a Castle' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 352). The castle (int. dims. 9.8m N-S; wall T 2m) is located on the N side of the farmyard and is aligned NNW-SSE. It is constructed of rubble limestone and sandstone, randomly coursed, with a base-batter at the NE angle. Only the E wall (ext. L c. 13.7m) and portion of N (ext. L 6.6m; H c. 5m) and S wall survive up to first-floor level. A lean-to shed has been built up against the E side with internal concrete division. N and E wall of shed are stone, S end with door and window (both missing) are in concrete wall. There are no features visible in the E wall of the castle in this section of the shed. Evidence of later internal lean-to at N end of E wall of castle. A corbel projects out from the N end of the E wall internally, incised with diagonal line tooling. It is well shaped and quite slender and would have supported a wooden floor. The NE quoins are missing and the SE quoins also appear to be missing though this angle is heavily obscured by ivy. The window in the E end of the N wall appears to be a later insert. Externally it is c. 2.2m from NE angle and 1.5m above ext. ground level. It consists of horizontal window (L 0.35m; H 0.19m) with crudely cut limestone surrounds and two bar-holes on both lintel and sill. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS081-001 Ringfort - rath
Description
On the flat edge of a gentle ridge which is aligned E-W and slopes to the NW to a stream at the base of the ridge, in pastureland. Another hill rises on the opposite side of the stream. Impressive bivallate ringfort, roughly circular (int. diam. 50m N-S; overall diam. 72.7m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.6m crest, 2.8m base; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.55m); deep, flat-bottomed, steep-sided fosse (Wth 2.8m; D 1.6m) and substantial, flat-topped outer earthen bank (Wth 4.9m crest, 9.2m; ext. H 2.12m). In the E quadrant. The fosse has been filled-in and the interior is flat up to the outer bank. The outer bank is generally higher than the inner bank, particularly in the S quadrant where it is surmounted by a post and wire fence. In the NNW sector the outer bank has been quarried into towards the interior. In the SW quadrant the fosse has been filled-in level with the interior, with no break in the outer bank. The fosse is very much as depicted on the 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map. There is a narrow cattle break (Wth 1.5m) in the bank in the E quadrant. There is no clear outer fosse, there is a slight dip in the ground level at the external base of the bank (Wth 3m). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS081-002 Enclosure
Description
On a natural rise on the W edge of a broad ridge which slopes, fairly steeply to a stream below, in reclaimed pastureland. The monument is depicted as a large, roughly circular enclosure on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map, and the S half is depicted on the 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map (diam. c. 67m E-W), the N half appears to have been levelled at this stage. An aerial photograph (GB89.AA.11, 16 July 1989) shows the cropmark of a curvilinear enclosure defined by a fosse, with traces of an incomplete outer fosse on the NE side. There is now no visible trace of the enclosure above ground. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 07 January 2013
