Description
Ruins of 18th century protestant church in walled graveyard (CO118-0340002-) in Bantry Town. Ivy-clad rectangular church (21.85m E-W; 7.9m N-S) with central doorway in W gable and occulus above; gable topped by bellcot. Four blocked windows in S wall and three in N wall. E gable replaced by neo-romanesque doorway into large vault of Earls of Bantry. Described in 1749 as a "decent parish church" (Smith 1815, Vol. 1, 285) but a new church built in 1818 (Brady 1863, Vol. 1, 166-7). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, artificial slate attic projection and cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted rendered walls with render corbels to eaves and render sill courses. Square-headed openings to second floor with two-over-two timber sliding sash windows. Round-headed openings to first floor having one-over-one timber sliding sash windows with moulded render archivolts and continuous impost course. Segmental-headed openings to ground floor with one-over-one timber sliding sash windows, moulded rendered surrounds and painted rendered sills with cast- and wrought-iron sill guards. Carved timber shopfront comprising pilasters supporting scroll bracketed capitals with decorative pediment motif and fascia board with raised lettering. Square-headed opening with timber fixed pane display windows. Square-headed door opening with overlight and timber panelled door.
