  Description

  In the rockery at St. Ernan's House is a small damaged block, 34cms by 26cms, on which is carved, in relief, two opposing beasts with conjoined cat-like heads, the tails of which terminate in a stylised vine-leaf. A small stem and vine-leaf springs from the touching fore legs. The decoration is of 15th/16th century character. There is a remarkably similar piece at the Church of Ireland parish church in Ramelton (DG046-005002-). An ink sketch of another carved fragment from St. Ernan's (now missing) is preserved in the OS Memoirs in the RIA. Both pieces were brought there from Magherabeg Friary (DG099-010001-) (OS Memoirs). The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Architectural heritage

• St. Ernan's House, house, 1820–1830 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey house with attic level, built between 1824 and 1826 and altered and extended c. 1895, having continuous open single-storey open veranda to the front elevation (east) with canted bay window openings to the outer bays. Slightly advanced gable-fronted bays to either end of the south elevation having pierced bargeboards and finials over gable apexes; single-storey conservatory with pitched glass roof to centre of south elevation and wide single-bay single-storey five-light canted-bay window to the east end of the south elevation having engaged Doric pilasters between window openings supported moulded cornice over with inset rectangular panels to frieze having vermiculated detailing. Single-bay single-storey entrance porch to the south elevation. Multiple-bay two-storey over basement return to the rear (west) added c. 1895. Now in use as a hotel with various two- and three-storey returns and additions to the rear (west). Pitched natural slate roof to main body of building having a central pair of ashlar chimneystacks with terracotta pots over, slightly overhanging eaves with paired cut stone brackets to eaves, terracotta ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Hipped natural slate roof to veranda supported on circular columns, and having decorative cast-iron verge boards. Roughcast rendered walls at first floor level with smooth render finish at ground floor level/veranda to east elevation. Square-headed window openings at first floor level having raised render block-and-start surrounds, stone sills and with six-over three-pane timber sliding sash windows to central three bays and paired four-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to the outer bays. Square-headed window openings at ground floor level having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed window openings to other elevations having variety of timber sliding sash windows, some paired and tripartite and some with raised rendered surrounds having chamfered reveals. Recessed round-headed door opening, set in vaulted recesses with round-headed niches flanking doorway, having timber panelled door with intersecting tracery to head, and with flight of stone steps. Interesting interior with plaster cornices, carved oak fireplaces, corridors with coffered ceilings, timber panelled shutters, carved timber doors with aedicules, and timber and wrought-iron balustrade to staircase. Set on a private island in Donegal Bay and reached from the mainland by a causeway (see 40909949). Island surrounded by rubble stone boundary wall. Converted outbuilding (see 40909948) to the rear (west). Mature wooded grounds to the rear having remains of former walled garden. Former bathing house (see 40909951) to the south-west tip of island.

• Gate lodge, 1840–1860 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey with attic level former gate lodge originally associated with St. Ernan’s (see 40909919), built c. 1845 and altered c. 1900, having slightly advance gable-fronted protection to centre of the main elevation (north-west) having canted-bay window opening at ground floor level. Gate pier built into the south-west corner of breakfront. Now in use as a private residence with modern extensions to the rear (south-east), and to the east. Pitched replacement artificial slate roofs having overhanging eaves, decorative timber bargeboards, timber drop finials to gable apex and to the corners of bargeboards, and with central rendered chimneystack. Rendered walls over rubble stone construction; coursed and dressed stone construction to breakfront; smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls to canted bay projection. Square-headed window openings with replacement one-over one pane timber sliding sash windows; two-over-two pane timber sliding sash window to front face of canted bay. Square-headed door opening with replacement timber panelled door. Set back from road in mature grounds to the south of Donegal Town and to the east of St. Ernan’s. House surrounded by tarmacadam driveway and mature gardens. Gate to the west comprising a pair of ashlar gate piers (on square-plan) having chamfered projecting plinths and moulded capstones.

• St. Ernan's House, bridge, 1850–1870 · Regional interest
  Description

  Causeway, built c. 1860, linking St. Ernan’s Island and house (see 40909919) to the mainland to the east. Causeway built on rubble stone base/platform. Rubble stone boundary/parapet walls to either side having rendered coping over; commemorative stone plaque to the south boundary wall/parapet. Tarmacadam deck with grass verges. Pier to the centre of the north parapet having squared and coursed rubble stone walls with mildly rock-faced coping over; grass deck. Slipway to the south-west corner having rubble stone piers (on circular-plan with conical and stepped rubble stone coping over. Gateway to the east end comprising a pair of mildly dressed ashlar gate piers (on square-plan) having crenellated coping over, and with a pair of wrought- and cast-iron gates having cast-iron finials over. Mass concrete former electricity pylon/lamp standard with metal ladder and fittings to the north-west corner. Spans part of Donegal Bay between Muckross Strand to the north and Dungally Strand to the south. Located to the south/south-west of Donegal Town.

• St. Ernan's House, bathhouse, folly, 1820–1830 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached single-bay two-storey former bathing house/folly (on square-plan) associated with St. Ernan’s House (see 40909919), built c. 1830, having rubble stone wall with integral square-headed entrance adjacent to the north-west. Roof hidden behind crenellated parapet. Rubble stone walls with square-headed openings, no fittings remaining. Located on the south-west tip of St. Ernan’s Island and to the south-west of St. Ernan’s House. Rubble stone boundary walls surround island, rocky foreshore and beach adjacent to the south and south-west. Possible series of stepping stones adjacent to the south.
